UNLV '96 was the most inexcusable loss in SDSU history without a doubt... +1K

This reminds me of the concept of "key games." I believe I posted here some weeks ago that Fresno State would be a key game, since a W in Fresno would put us a lot closer to bowl eligibility without having to beat either Nevada (which remains a threat) and/or Wyoming (which now looks a lot less threatening). Fresno is still a very important game, but I now think that the San Jose State game is our first "key game." Most of us never thought we would beat Washington, and both Army and North Dakota seemed like easy pickings. In that latter category was San Jose State. Notice that I said "was." Clearly, the Spartans are much better than a couple of years ago. How they made such progress has to be the result of very good work by their new head coach. In any case, SJSU will not roll over and play dead. In short, I really think that beating SJSU is crucial. 3-1 going into MWC play will make getting to 7 wins (the least number that will get us to a bowl, I think) practical though not necessarily easy. On the other hand, if we take on Fresno with 2 losses, we may be in trouble. Look at it this way. If we barely managed to beat an FCS school and then lose to SJSU, what does that say about the program? After all, both were home games, both seemed quite winnable. We would like to beat Fresno, Nevada, and Boise State. We need to beat San Jose State. We can't lose this game and expect 2012 to be as good as 2011. And what would a disappointing season say about our chances in the BE next season? Beat the Spartans! AzWm If your insight in politics was as good as your insight in Aztec athletics, you would have your own TV show. Patience, friend, patience. Just give me some more time. AzWm

Yes, the 1996 Cowboys got zero respect nationally. How is it possible to win TEN games and not go to a bowl? (Of course, with so many bowls operating currently, no team with ten wins would stay home.

Doesn't make the statement any less true. Exactly and it's difficult imagining SDSU taking the step to become a consistent top 35 team without building a solid, consistent talent base. We recruit on the same level with the bottom of the PAC-12. Develop those players and we can make some noise on the national scene. Plus, outside of going undefeated, we have no shot at playing in anything but a mediocre bowl game. That's all the MWC has ties to. And just how many "mediocre bowl games" has SDSU football participated in while a member of the MW?

You are really going to take that out on us the next couple days, aren't you?

And just how many "mediocre bowl games" has SDSU football participated in while a member of the MW? greater than the number of "threads" retiredaztec has participated in without embarrassing himself.

You don't get better recruits by making mediocre bowl games and losing to all the good teams you play without a gimmicky offense. Well then Insider, I can therefore deduce from your comment that you are convinced that the Brady Hoke and Rocky Long recruits aren't as a whole or individually, better than the Tom Craft and Chuck Long recruits. Oh they are, in fact Brady Hoke's recruits are good enough to get you into top 20 with good coaching, but I think we just have average coaching, we will be respectable for a while but won't take that big step.
