Deshawn got my vote... his improvement over last season was remarkable, and I think he is more turn-around ready for Gametime than Winston will be in '12-'13, at least through the first half of the season. As soon as the Ginger Giant began practicing with the squad, you could see Deshawn's game noticeably improve week to week, and his effort and desire showed whenever he was on the court. One of my favorite rememberances from last season - other than the unexpected success, NBJamaal's emergence, and Aztec Motto - was watching Deshawn improve in virtual realtime fro week to week. Remember, he was a proverbial 'diamond in the ruff' when he came here, and is still very much a work in progress... and who better to fill his metaphorical "empty cup" than Fish? That he picked Moser's pocket last year on the Mesa is IMO a glimpse into what we can expect from him this season. That being said, I think if you were to compare Deshawn (this season) to what I think we can expect from Winston next year, IMO there would be no contest...

Winston is pretty special. He has the potential to be the most versatile defensive player on the team and we all know how much Fisher preaches defense. So I think he will get more minutes based on that alone. Any offense he provides this year is a bonus.

I think many of you do not realize what type of talent it takes to be a 5 star recruit. I'm not knocking Deshawn. I love his defense and rebounding last year when he was still very raw. I expect him to be good this year. It takes a special talent to be that highly rated.

Nothing about Winston tells me he'll be better than Kawhi, and Kawhi only had 3 stars. If you ignore the stars and just look at the players pure game, It's easy to expect more from Matt Shrigley....with only 3 stars.

Kawhi was 4 stars. C'mon Man! Ok, 4...I think Jamaal was only 2. Russell Westbrook was 4 also.

I voted for Stephens based on the fact that he has experience playing with our team and at the D1 level. Shepard, on the other hand is a more skilled player than Stephens and can play almost all positions for us on the floor, while Stephens is locked at the 4/5.
It's tough comparing a kid who's already been in the system to one that's just becoming acclimated to the team/system.

He'll have one of the better seasons, if not the best season of any player in the country. But lets not make this a JF thread please. Thank you Well in that case, I voted DeShawn. He has the momentum right now and quite frankly as much as I think Winston is going to be awesome it's hard for me to vote for a guy that has yet to step onto a college court.

You're overrating scoring ability You're underrating scoring ability. Kawhi was never a big scorer though.

You're underrating scoring ability. Kawhi was never a big scorer though. He was a physical freak with a crazy motor, AND he could score.

Shepard will be a very good defensive player. Shepard will be much better at passing to get easy buckets for other players.
I expect DeShawn to improve a lot this year but he won't be nearly as good in those two areas.
I value defense and passing more than most folks and therefore voted for Shepard.

He was a physical freak with a crazy motor, AND he could score. Funny, you just described Shepard... Shepard has huge problems putting the ball in the hole. As good a he may seem to be at passing, he's just as bad at footwork. In transition or on offensive rebounds against smaller players, Shepard can score, but ask him to score against a defender in the half court, it's not happening. He's a great defender if he only has to worry about 1 man, but his team defense will need to come a long way before you can call him a "good defender".

This is completely off topic but one of my favorite players to watch this year will be James Rahon. Reason being is because he'll be in a more defined role that suits his ability, and because of that, he'll hit big shots for us like he did in 2010. Shooters don't need a ton of minutes to make an impact. He can play 15-20 mpg and be one of our most important players. Try guarding all that athleticism with a motivated, confident James Rahon spotting up in the corner. Good luck!
