This is really good for a number of reasons. Heath gets his money. Moorad can finish teaching us his course on "The Art of the Leveraged Buyout" a bit sooner. Byrnes, with his marvelous drafting ability, can secure us a couple of lifelong class a players. And Mick E. Mouse will finally get a shot at the closer role should ever such occasion appear for the Pads. I'm jacked up.

Marlins overpaid for him. Padres will have 2 top ten draft picks, plus a supplemental first rounder.
Edit : Appears it will be a 2nd round pick, before the Marlins pick.

Heath will love working with Ozzie. (Sarcasm) (#nutjob) As many issues as Ozzie often had with his GM, he has a reputation for being a manager his players play hard for, and respect a lot. Just from what I've read. I'm not suggesting to be an expert or anything. At least we know Ozzie is a winner.

We know you and Bill can spin with the best of them . JK buddy. Anyways, Bell & Adams are gone now. Who closes this season you think? Gregerson? Heath Bell was a "modified" type A, so we don't get Miamis first rounder. Instead, we receive a supplemental pick sandwiched between 1st & 2nd round I believe. www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/modified-procedure-for-type-a-free-agents.htmlPadres off-season, 2011 (so far): Matt Palmer (complete garbage, saw him pitch plenty locally here in Anaheim). Mark Kotsay (hasn't been good since Kevin O'Connell was SDSU's QB) John Baker (backup catcher with subpar defensive skills) Thank you, Mr. Moorad. Mr. Installment Payment owner. So the Padres slip further towards an all AAA roster... AAAA San Diego. This team (on paper), is so bad. Forsythe and Decker will both be marginal players at best, but Bill and Ryan will keep talking about the studs down at A and AA ball and ignore those who don't pan out in San Diego. The future is bright, because San Antonio has the best record in the minors!!! Those are the two I am watching closely because Ryan was really high on both. Forsythe is no kid anymore, he'll be 25 in a month and looked completely overwhelmed at the plate when he got to San Diego. Jaff Decker looks like a ballplayer to me.....but only hit .236 at AA, though he did drive in 92 runs and hit for a.790 OPS. Just 21, the jury is still out on him and he needs more seasoning in the minors. His upside is considerably higher than Forsythye's, whom I predict will be out of baseball by age 30. You'd like to see your big prospects hit a little better than .230 at AA ball, though. Let's be honest.

Padres Interested In Andrew Bailey By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 2 at 3:15pm CST] The Padres are interested in acquiring Athletics closer Andrew Bailey to replace Heath Bell, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter). It remains likely that the A's will trade Bailey, Olney writes.
The Rangers, Mets, Blue Jays, Mariners and Reds are also interested in Bailey, one of Billy Beane's main offseason trade chips. The 27-year-old right-hander posted a 3.24 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 41 2/3 innings in 2011 after recovering a forearm strain that sidelined him early in the season. MLBTR projects a $3.5MM salary for Bailey in 2012.
Luke Gregerson, Ernesto Frieri and Josh Spence are projected to return to a Padres bullpen that also included Bell, Mike Adams and Chad Qualls six months ago. San Diego obtains two compensatory draft picks for losing Bell, who agreed to a three-year, $27MM deal with the Marlins yesterday.

Josh, what makes you think Decker will be a marginal player at best?

There is no way the Padres should have paid that much for Bell. Heath got over on the Marlins.

Agreed. Bell stands to make nearly 40 million dollars if the option for year 4 gets picked up by the Fish.

Josh, what makes you think Decker will be a marginal player at best? Reports I have read on him, and his .236 average at AA ball, in 600 plate appearances. But then....I'm a layman, not a scout...so what the f do I know? It's just a prediction.

I'm not saying the kid will be a perennial All-Star, but my opinion is that he will be an above average major league contributor. Plate discipline, a great throwing arm, he has a lot of tools.

Agreed, Marlins overpaid for Heath. But I really am tired of seeing the players I enjoy watching go to another team. Is there anybody left on the Padres that I should care about? Latos, maybe.... I know it probably doesn't mean much, but I was a season ticket holder. 2 years ago I gave up my tickets, and just bought single game for about 10 games, last year I was not motivated to go to ONE SINGLE GAME. How many other fans feel the same way? What has happened so far in the off season to make me change my mind this year? Losing Bell, well that's sure a step in the right direction.
