Both had a limited part in practice today. Both doubtful for the UNLV game. Tapley has the better chance to play out of either of them. I hope we have Chase and Tim back for the Byu game. I have a feeling we will have Chase back for the New Mexico game.

That sucks about Tapley...I figured he would be back for UNLV.

I heard that all he did at practice yesterday was shoot "jumpers", without the jump. For you "youngins", we called that a "set shot" way back in the day...

While it certainly sucks for Saturday, more meaningful minutes for J. Franklin can only help us down the road.

Carlwell will double his playing time, using both his typical minutes, as well as Tim's.
J. Franklin will take Rahon's spot in the rotation as the SG off the bench.

I can live with him coming off the bench as that was my expectation based info coming out on Monday. While the game it not at altitude, UNLV will try and push the tempo. They will also force us to take outside shots. Last game against them we shot 4-17...fortunately they went 1-18. So it would be nice to have Chase available as a threat from long range.

Oddly, I think it's a great change-of-pace to see more of Carlwell and Franklin and less of Shelton and Tapley (as talented as those two players are.)
And here's why:
With our primary lineup, we're essentially a two dimensional team. We can pound it inside or we can light it up outside. When we're really clicking, we do both. But of late, teams have slowed us down by bothering our bigs down low and trying to get White or Thomas into foul trouble. Teams then hope that we start missing from outside. For the most part this season, if things aren't working inside, we're clicking from the outside. Or if we're not hitting from the outside, we pound it down low. But when teams stop us down low AND we're not hitting our shots, we look like anything but a well-oiled machine in certain games, e.g., Vegas, CSU, BYU, TCU. We then have to rely on our defense to bail us out (which is a great resource to always keep you in any game no matter how cr*ppy you're playing on offense.)
However, with the addition of Carlwell and Franklin, we become three dimensional. We can pound it down low. We can shoot from the perimeter. And we can slash to the basket, dish inside, get junk-ball put-backs, etc. I'm pretty sure that's not something most teams that have watched a lot of tape on SDSU are prepared for. It's definitely a late-season knuckleball pitch that will keep the opposition off-balance. And, IMO, it should be another arrow for the quiver as we head into Tourney play, even after Shelton and Tapley return.

I have a feeling that Fisher will save what is left of Shelton's knees, ankles & feet for YBU. Just a thought.

Have you ever tried to make baskets shooting with two hands? But some were good at it, amazingly enough. Some shot free throws that way, even underhanded! AzWm

Altitude of Las Vegas. . . an interesting question. Not like Albuquerque or Laramie, but it is 2030 feet. I suppose that is not too bad, but it's not 500 feet, either. AzWm

Longtime...Shooting with two hands feels really weird IF all you know is the classic one-handed jumper. I think that Jamal uses a hybrid shot. It sure looks to me like he's got his right elbow flared a bit "outside", similar to how BOTH elbows were used during the two-handed set shot era. Looks weird.
For kicks, what "shots" to do think are absent from the game today, that still COULD be used effectively.
I'll go first...The Hook, from 6-12 feet. Really tough to defend, and using the backboard HIGH OFF THE GLASS. Hardly ever see it, and the extra height makes the shot really tough to block.

What we'll miss is Tapley's defense and nose for the ball.

I like when Carlwell is at 5 and Thomas is at 4.
