Maybe not. If the Egyptian Army does not oblige us by stabilizing Egypt until a secular ruling faction develops, we are in big trouble. (Big trouble? How about this. The Muslim Brotherhood takes power in Egypt. They decide to teach the West a lesson. They close the Suez Canal for one year. Yes, it would hurt Egypt, but would the Islamists care about that? Small price to pay to attack Western economies. Now, just what do you think a year long closure of the Suez Canal would do to the flow of oil to the West? Think hard, now, if you dare.) Here's a discussion of the Egyptian Army. www.nationalreview.com/articles/259040/don-t-count-egypt-s-army-andrew-c-mccarthy?page=1AzWm

Which is exactly why we need to become energy independent. Then we don't have to give a $#!+ about what those people do. Invest all the money we spend on propping up these Middle Eastern governments and use it on something that will actually benefit us now and in the future.
Can anyone honestly give a good reason why we shouldn't? It would create jobs and would be much better for our national security. I wish the stimulus money was 100% focused on accomplishing this.

I am afraid that what we would do to get energy independent are far different based only on the fact that I would have no "stimulus" money in play to begin with. Were it up to me there would be no debt raising "stimulus" to begin with.

Were it up to me there would be no debt raising "stimulus" to begin with. I didn't say that I supported having a stimulus but assuming that a stimulus was going to happen and nothing would change it, how would you have spent that money (and no you can't say paying off the debt)? At least there would have been something to show for all that spending.

If I had to spend it as you say, I would make sure that every penny was looked at as though it were my own. No government jobs would have been authorized. I might have spent a little trying to figure out how to close down the Dept of Education and the Dept of Energy. I would make sure that what was put into infrastructure was of a lasting value. I would not have spent the $20 Million on signs telling people what a great job the Obama Administration was doing flushing our money down a rat hole. I could go on and on, but really it would never have happened were I in charge.

AzWm It's unlikely the Muslim Brotherhood will take power in Egypt and if they did they would find themselves as dependent upon us as the current regime has been. They would also be dealing with an officer corps that has been, in great part, trained by our military. This says a lot: That was the plan. Islambouli, like several of his coconspirators, was a Muslim Brotherhood veteran who’d drunk deep the incitements of the Ikhwan’s martyred leader, Sayyid Qutb, but lost patience with the organization’s Fabian approach to revolution. That "Fabian approach" is the reason bin Laden has denounced the Muslim Brotherhood. They hate Israel but they do not see themselves as being at war with the west, no matter what Glenn Beck says. =Bob

Just go after two departments total around #50 billion a year. Remind me again what DOD's budget was last year. =Bob

what if Canada elected a cobra that breathed fire and he slithered over the border and gained strength by eating bibles.
Is everything a slippery slope/straw man/red herring?
