I am planning a trip to see the Padres (A+) team in Lake Elsinore. They have a lot of players from the Fort Wayne (A) championship team of last year. Last year Fort Wayne had the best record in all levels of baseball. This year Lake Elsinore has the best record in baseball (40-20).
They have done this without a player who was a star with Fort Wayne last year. 20 year old, Jaff Decker, was injured for a month and has not Been hitting well in his short time back (87 AB). Once he gets going they should be even better.
Jaff's 2008 numbers with Fort Wayne: .299 .442 .514 .956
Jaff so far with Lake Elsinore: .167 .234 .298 .532
Lake Elsinore wins with both pitching and hitting. They have the best ERA in the Cal League. They are second in scoring in the Cal League.
They have 3 very good starters. I will time my trip to see on of them.
Player............ERA....Age (Yr.Mo.)...Aquired.....From
Anthony Bass 2.93...22.7.....5th round 2008....Wayne State
Nick Schmidt 2.97....24.8.....1st round 2007.....Arkansas
Juan Oramas 1.76...20.1......Foriegn Draft 2006...Mexico
Something strange I noticed when looking at the standings. Teams in the Cal League this year are doing much better on the road. Only the two last place teams are winning more at home. How do you explain a team like High Desert who is 12-15 at home but 22-10 on the road? I guess they must have great per deim
I think I will go to one of the following games:
Thursday 6/18 Nick Schmidt
Friday 6/19 Juan Oramas
