In looking for S mountain info I came across this. Peterson Gym record crowd of 5,156 on Friday, April 27, 1973 for Men's VB. published in the Aztec on 5-1-73 The original seating configuation was larger than the current bleachers . Attachments:

I was there. We also beat Long Beach for the NCAA title that year at the Sports Arena. I think we had about 10,000 for that one.

great photo - that's future Del Mar lifguard Duncan McFarland in great cover position at left-front. I was there and remember the insane after pary in MB with volley dollys !!!
Another maxed out crowd was for the UCLA match that same year...Aztecs got a two-minute standing ovation before UCLA was evem introduced and the crowd just intimidated the Bruins.

I remember attending basketball games in Peterson when I was a student (c. 1962-63) and I've been there within the last several years. I am curious to know how it was different and when was it changed. Also, what is the current capacity? I had thought it was about 3,500, but that may not be correct. AzWm

The original wood bleachers were replaced when the ABA's San Diego Conquistadores used Peterson Gym. The seat replacement was after the May 1973 VB match before the ABA's 73-74 season.
This cut the gym's capacity to 3,688 from the posted capacity of 5,000

A couple of games I remember there from not all that long ago -- both around 1996...
1) A rather packed house for a game against a pretty good Colorado State team
2) An exhibition game against a team from Australia called the "36ers" (I think that was the number). What made it memorable was that they had a NBA prospect on the team, and none other than Jerry West strode on into the gym to take a seat on the wood benches and do some scouting for the Lakers.

I was at both VB games too. IIRC the finals at the Sports Arena was the largest crowd to watch a volleyball game in the US until the '84 Olympics. The US -- with Aztec Chris Marlowe from the '73 National Champs (and basketball too) -- won the gold.

3688. Its a garbage hole, and we should knock it down and build something new for both bball teams, volleyball team. If could also serve as another practice facility

Aztec Chris Marlowe who played hoops like a fullback, had the nickname "Psy" as in Psycho reflecting his party habits who then went on to a successfull announcing career.

That place is such a dump, I can't believe we played there, hell, I can't believe volleyball still has to play there and the bball teams have to practice there

I was there and was at most of the games that year. That whole volleyball experience in '73 is why I have always felt that the whole "no one cares" feeling at SDSU is not true.
Those games were a blast and the fans were crazy. We had more fans at Pauley Pavilion that year than UCLA had. And they were coming off two national championships.
Because of the whole nature of San Diego (weather), games need to be fun and important for people to get behind their teams. This year has proved this. Be competitive and the fans will be there.

I never missed volleyball during those years. You could see the intimidation on visiting players' faces.
The place has really outlived its usefulness. If the money were available, they should tear it down and build something more useful, i.e., the practice facility Ziegler wrote about in today's UT.
