www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/22/aztecs-face-four-distinct-disadvantages/My priorities: 1) Coaches salaries: We at least have to try to keep coach Hutson after this season! 2) Charter flights: Recruiting tool, especially important for our high altitude games and helps to improve the academic side! 3) Practice facility: If we want to be big-time, we need this! Badly! 4) Guarantees: I'm pretty sure we could have made the NCAA at least twice more over the last 4 years if we would have had more money for guarantees. Thinking about it, that's nearly a bargain! We need a basketball excellent fund like the one for football ... and we all need to step up! If we won't do this, we will have no more rights to bitch about 20 win years and the NIT.

I agree with your priorities.... Coach Jut is special and we really need to keep him.

I like the idea of a BB Excellence Fund. How do we get it started? Dave L, what do we need to do?
I would add to the coaching priorities that we support somehow the efforts of volunteers. e.g., Al Schaffer.
I'll make a $100 pledge right now to get it going.

I think we should charter at least for 2 games this season. There should be some money after all the sellouts of Viejas.
The players should be booked on First class or aisle seats at least. how books team travel? I know we have a contract with AA. They should be on top of the corporate accounts rep from AA and making sure the players are upgraded or in the aisles. Short of that, we need to pay for upgrades or would allow alumni to donate their Frequent flyer miles to the school to be used for this sort of stuff. Use the miles for the upgrades.
We are going to face another crisis at the end of this season, with other schools trying to poach our coaching staff, so just like with Hoke, Jim Sterk needs to start planning for how we can retain our coaches and work on those contracts and make sure we have a high buyout clause.
The other stuff like practice facilities also have to be addressed but we have to have a short term plan, and a long term permanent solution.
And yes, the Athletic Department has to make it easier for people that are just tuning in to be able to donate online.

I think this is an interesting topic and one worth discussing in more detail. 1. Life is not perfect. If you look at other schools there are plenty of things wrong with each school. 2. Part of not having everything, makes you tougher mentally, sometimes I think some of these schools give all these kids all these perks that frankly don't make sense. 3. I agree, Peterson Gym is a $#!+ box. I dont think you would want to refurbish it. More like knock it down. And build a nice smaller arena/practice facility. The men can practice there, women can play games there. Volleyball can play there. You can never have enough bball courts on a college campus. 4. Salaries- I am sure we will do something in the off season if we continue this magical run deep into the NCAA tournament for them, especially the assistants. I definitely think there should be a PAID shooting coach/skills improvement/weight training on the team. This is how players get better over there 4 year career. Lastly, I like the makeup of our team. I wouldnt trade anyone on this team. Great kids, great attitudes, humble, and hardworkers that represent the school well. 4. Where are the basketball offices now? I thought they were in Viejas? This is my big problem. When Cox arena was built, the basketball team should get first

I like Carlwell's attitude: “Me, I’m all about rings.”

Does this all not show how far removed are fan's are from reality?
The coaches have to ask. Our fan's will step up in some way if asked.
We keep losings assistant coaches. This has to stop. The woman's program has as well.
We need to get fan's to the woman's games and to baseball.
See why BYU needed to get Basketball into a league? The cost to buy games is out of the question.
So now we know we could have gone to NCAA if we had more home games. 1 on one helps some.
We are not big time until we can buy home games for football and basketball. Sell outs allow you to do this.
MI can pay 1 million with 100K fans paying big money.
If we drew 70K we could get better teams as well.
A 4OK home stadium will not pay for much.
Middle TN. gets all their money from the SEC road games and can't get any home games with a 30K stadium. The Pac 10 does not pay a million like MI.

I don't want to violate my offering in the peace treaty I proposed ( aztecmesa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=ats&action=display&thread=9013), but this success won't do much for the big picture unless people stick with the team/program by purchasing season tickets and getting involved in the Aztec Club and such. Coaches, players AND boosters build programs.

It's VERY difficult to support women's basketball when the ding-dong conference schedules games opposite one another. That must stop.

Zeiglar left out the biggest reason our basketball program has continued to exist in a money pit. Our beautiful arena. Find me one other Division 1 basketball program that has to pay to use their on-campus arena. I don't think you will. We pay an unbelievable amount of rent for every game and practice...including the women. We are probably moving "A Night With The Aztecs" this year to a nice hotel because of the exorbitant amount of money we have to pay to use the Arena for one day. I won't say how much...but come up with what you think is a fair amount for one day's use...then quadruple that amount. I've yet to find one person that actually understands the contract that was originally signed but I'm told by some people that there was a pay off date and others that think we have to pay this rent forever. We could have everything the article says we need...if we weren't paying to use our own facility...and it's a ton of money. If he really wanted to do his job...get that contract and let it been seen in the sunlight. I'm also told they lose out on lots of concerts due to how much money they demand.

I was told by our last AD to blame the coaches...they are the ones that vote for these days and times (minus the tv games). They should be playing on different nights and not w/in 4 hours of each other on Saturdays.

So I am in complete agreement that we need to upgrade a bunch of stuff at sdsu. If I had unlimited resources I would tear down Peterson, put in a prac facility/ place for vball and some additional athletic meeting rooms/ etc.. Second i would put in a soccer stadium at the turf field by baseball. Put in real grass and build seating into the banked hills around it. I would add a pavilion outside the back o the training rooms overlooking soccer and baseball where you could host alumni booster events. The soccer stadium could host a ton of soccer stuff an generate revenue for the school.
Be that as it may, and as much as I want sparkling facilities, I want to point out how many bounceback transfers sdsu gets in every sport. Kids who chose BCS schools who charter, have amazing facilities and perks. At the end of the day, those things are great, but don't ensure success and happy athletes.
Yes I know we are in an arms race and it helps in recruiting etc... But just a reminder that money doesn't buy happiness. Kids want to go where they will get better, be a part of something great, be treated well and have success. Buildings and "stuff" are only a part of that. Boosters and fans get involved and give. Sdsu, figure out ways to get back control of our facilities. Then rent out t Gwynn stadium for high school showcases and pocket that money. (right now the school owns and operates all our facilities so athletics cannot generate any income with them. In addition to fundraising we have to generate income somehow). This is what dave L is saying with Viejas. We are paying to use these facilities and when outside groups use them, athletics does not get the money. Our coaches have to rent out our facilities for summer camps.
But until the money is there, we need to continue to create a great atmosphere of sdsu athletics. That's why we keep getting kids. And transfers. They've tasted the other and realize that a building doesn't make a great college experience.

Maybe people should be aware of this every time they want to fire Fisher. Uh, how are you going to get a qualified coach at his salary? They really need some contributors to bring up the assistant coaches salaries. Now we know why Carwell wears the long sleeve shirts. It is freezing at the practice and so he has become use to wearing them in practices so he wears them in the games. At least I am assuming that is the reason.
The MWC needs to be the BCS designation to stay competitive with these other schools. We have been lucky that Fisher has not pulled a Hoke and left for more money and prestige, but plenty of his assistants have.

Great to know.
Always thought every team in MWC charters regularly.
Anyone know how long the longest flights are, for example from SDSU to TCU?
