designed by Franklin Archer '31 and produced as a decal by the bookstore. 1st school decal using an " Aztec warrior" and the new school colors "scarlett & black" . Replaced the old "Purple and Gold" school decal that had been in use for many years. Attachments:

Nice! Thanks for posting. I only wish the nose wasn't so perfect. Perfect nose = white man.
Post more historical stuff? I love it!

Great history. This is the kind of thing that has been missing from the SDSU story. It provides that mystical "connection". As for the Aztec, just gotta say you can see the progression up to the disgruntled Monty where it seems to have ended. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

I guess this confirms that Monty was, is and should for ever be our mascot. Didn't see the BYWho Cougar in that depiction?

I believe our classic late 1940’s Aztec logo was designed by Angelus Pacific in Fullerton. This firm was very active with college bookstores after WWII and their art department worked with bookstore managers to create the most popular classic mascot designs like the “tough” Tommy Trojan. Schools were not sophisticated like today and relied on venders to design apparel and novelty items Attachments:

The 1936 Aztec (color provided by fellow member "greysuit" ) has a more regal ethnic look - surprising for the 30's. You may want to know why the "S"? In the 1920's and 30's, we were known in Southern California as "State". Cheerleaders wore sweaters with the block "S". Newspapers headlines referred to us as such. There was UCLA, the privates, we were the only 'State". Santa Barbara was Santa Barbara .... Fresno - north was No Cal Attachments:

I like it better than the DS logo. No. You must be wrong. Since SDSU paid somebody $35,000 to create that thing, it must be good. Personally, I like that original look. Probably patterned after a legitimately historical pattern. (As opposed to a Steve Martin skit on Saturday Night Live.)

I still can't believe they picked that stupid "DS" logo. What the f x x x were they thinking? I remember some of the options that were presented at the time, and some were really cool, but then to my surprise, they actually went ahead and decided on the worst one -- the WORST one. They could have paid some SDSU graphic student to produce a better one for 35 bucks, let alone $35,000.What a moronic move. Who makes these decisions to go outside for dumb ass ideas?

The S version with a black "S" Like the black S maybe the DS logo would look better if the colors were reversed? I guess someone would say we were the black and red then.

I like it better than the DS logo. You'd like poop on a stick better than the Current SD State logo.
