From his ESPN chat today:
I will be at the epic matchup between san diego state and byu this coming wednesday here in provo.....the loser of this game will they more than likely fall out of the top 10 and will the winner possibly move up to the top 3? Andy Katz (2:22 PM)
Possibly. If SDSU loses to BYU on the road then it shouldn't drop more than a spot or two -- max. That's a tough, tough road game. If BYU beats SDUS then it should move way up. The league these two are in should have no bearing on moving up in the rankings.

It may mean that it is tough to win at 4,500 feet of elevation!

Let me say this. BYU lost one game to a team NOT in the top 25, UCLA, and are in the top 10. If SDSU loses to BYU, a top 10 team, and drops out of the top 10 with one loss, then something stinks in this whole ranking stuff.

If we lose a relatively close game in Provo, I see BYU moving to about 6 or 7 and us falling down to about 9 or 10. If we win, we may move up to No. 5, but BYU would fall to about 15.

The best part is that it does not really matter. We are a lock for the NCAA tourney and will get a great seed. This is a game that has no importance other than it is a great game that might decide the conference championship (aminly if BYU loses). I feel like we are a part of the Big East going into a game like this. Massive excitemnet and is very important but the real season starts in March (and we know we will be playing in March).

I know it seems easy to assume a win, but BYU still have a VERY tough game to play before this epic game. They are AT Colorado St on Saturday - a team that just crushed UNLV at the T&M.
Also, to me the significance of winning the MWC regular season title is this...the winner is probably the #2 seed in the West Regional. If SDSU makes the sweet 16 and in Anahiem, we would have HUGE home court advantage (I know I would be there). If BYU wins and SDSU gets a #3 seed in the Southwest for example, we would be playing in San Antonio with teams like Kansas, Mizzu, Texas or Texas A&M somewhere in the mix.
If SDSU is to somehow make the Final 4, a Tucson / Anaheim path really is our best hope. Tucson is basically a lock so we really want SDSU to also get Anaheim.

A BYU win in Provo would be a marque win when it comes to selection time for the Big Dance. It would give us a higher seeding. We have less top teams left to play than some of the other top 10 teams. We must beat BYU twice during regular season. I'd like to beat them a 3rd time in the MWC tourney, but would be fine with them losing in the 1st or 2nd round in an upset.

Beating BYU is important as it gives us no only a big resume win (in hopes of #1 or #2 seed) but more importantly keeps us above BYU - who right now is our biggest challenge to 'best team in the west' To answer the original question, a BYU win means that now BYU is the top dog while SDSU is the top 10 team behind the MWC leader (which is where BYU is now).
