For the southern Christian Right....this is the prevailing thought...why is there any surprise here?? Just because the guy said what probably 50% of the population down there believes?

You may be correct (though I think you are overly pessimistic about Mississippians). In any event, the new Gov.'s statement was monumentally stupid. Stupid politically most of all. And, by the way, his statement was un-Christian according to my understanding of Christianity. The Governor was doing a bit of off-the-cuff theologizing. He should have known better. What he did was the equivalent of searching high and low for the loaded bear trap and, once it's found, deliberately stepping in it. I suppose it's also possible that the governor has never seen a bear trap before, but isn't this Mississippi we're talking about? Hasn't he read Faulkner's story "The Bear"? AzWm
