This is an op ed piece. Can you please post statistics backing this opinion? And it's offered here in the same spirit; i.e., an opinion piece. Opinions may or may not be based on fact. The best of them offer important questions that readers are well advised to take seriously. I find one line in this piece especially noteworthy in that regard. . . . . .legislative ambitions to limit medical treatments and save money through statist intervention. My opposition to virtually everything that Obama and the Democrats want to do is based on my rejection of the collectivist spirit that inspires their agenda. They see, I believe, society as a giant organism whose parts (living, breathing human beings . . . individuals) are to some extent expendable. It's the organism as a whole what is important. If I cut my finger and it becomes seriously infected, the doctors may tell me that it must be amputated. Well, hell, I surely don't want to lose a finger, but I don't want to die either, so in such a case the choice is easy. However, if instead of a finger you are talking about a human being, well, that's a different matter. We have probably all seen submarine movies in which the boat has been damaged and is in danger of sinking. A crewman closes and dogs a hatch even though he knows there are men in the next compartment who will drown. He does it, reluctantly, because the alternative is to lose the entire crew. Okay, that is terrible, but in a war such split-second decisions may have to be made. (The movie Abandon Ship has a similar situation, though in that case it was a peace time accident and not damage caused by hostile enemy action.) You may remember what Stalin said when someone (Lady Astor?) asked him when he was going to stop murdering people. "You can't make an omlette without breaking eggs," the smiling psychopath replied. That's what I'm afraid of in this case. The ObamaCare advocates are sure that mean, viscous, avaricious capitalists are responsible for the high cost of medical care and the lack of coverage for many Americans. That theory is mostly crap, but they really believe it. Now, what happens when they discover that you can't increase by tens of millions the number of people for whom the government provides health care and at the same time reduce the cost of that care? I will tell you what they will do, if in fact they did not understand this very well from the very outset. They are going to institute very strict, even draconian rationing. And the rationing will be based on political considerations and no others. But, if you don't mind leaving your health care decisions to a wild-eyed leftist who does not know you and thinks he is in the business of making omelets anyway, I guess you will think that all is well.
