Can some of you posters who are familiar with SDSU chime in with some of the pros and cons of SDSU as a school and the athletics programs, preferrably the basketball and football programs.
I am trying to get a feel for SDSU and get some info for a kid who can be a potential walk on/student for the football team.
Thanks

One thing: San Diego State is an academic powerhouse. The entance requirements are higher than Stanford, and the quality of students graduating from San Diego State University is unequaled, anywhere.
Hail Aztec Montezuma!

I mean,I like my alma mater and I know they've tightened entrance requirements these past few years, and I certainly want to sell it when I can,but higher entrance requirements than Stanford's? I think the issue is that we have more people applying for admission than alot of higher ranked universities. Alot of it has to do with the location of the University, can't beat San Diego.

Here's a sales pitch then: You can tell him that much of the pieces of the modern wide open game of football had its origins here via Don Coryell. His influence is still seen in EVERY football game played TODAY. How many schools can tout that as part of their legacy? Ha!

Here is an online tool that helps you compare schools. Here you can compare Stanford and SDSU. SDSU is ranked 183 vs Stanford is ranked 5. While SDSU accepts 36% of Freshmen, Stanford accepts only 8%. Part of that has to do that Stanford is very small compared to SDSU.
Aside from all that, talk to any High School counselor for real life testimonials on where people are getting accepted and rejected. What I hear is that more students are getting rejected from SDSU than the traditional powerhouses.
As far as students experience, well, you have to be honest, Private school with small classes vs Public school with large classes, having to crash classes all the time. etc...

Hail Aztec Montezuma! speaking of this I can recall a woman from my SDSU physics class who went on to become a NASA astronaut. Her name was Ellen Ochoa.

eastcoaster - Great idea, coming to the college's board to do some research!
I graduated a few years ago, and am probably biased; that being said, I enjoyed every moment of my time at SDSU. The facilities on campus are constantly being upgraded, most classes are taught by actual professors (as opposed to grad students) who are interested in educating and not just research, the food is great, and the weather can't be beat. And Aztec athletics - boy oh boy are they making waves. This is the time to be on board, because things will only get better from here.
There really isn't much bad to report that other large schools don't deal with: parking can be tough sometimes, registering for classes as a freshman can be tough (unless you are an athlete, in which case I believe you get priority registration - awesome), and dealing with administrative issues can be challenging (unless, again, you are an athlete and have additional resources).
Whatever decision he makes, best of luck to him!

I think SDSU is a great school, but on the academic side there are still people who think of SDSU as just a party school, which is not true, but the perception is there. On the athletic side we are experiencing great success, but we suffer from not being in a BCS conference and lacking national exposure. If we make a run deep into the NCAA tourney that will great help our national athletic exposure. Over time things Will keep changing for the better. I think you could argue SDSU is on of the most underrated schools in the country.
