but College athletics, and specifically College Football is making me sick. The greed, corruption, politics and hypocrisy of it all disgust me.

myespn.go.com/s/conversations/show/story/5265439And read what Bill Self, and Kansas fans are saying here. What a joke. They act like Kansas Athletics are over. Now they just will know what its like to be the other 50% of FBS schools that don't have the safety net of the BCS.

In the comments, this:
I don't care anymore, I am getting sick of ESPN's involvement with everything. First they get involved with the Mike Leach and Craig James issue. Second they come out and tell the world that if USC if guilty they shouldn't be punished harshly because they are too important to the PAC 10 and to the TV market in LA. Who cares, what is right is right !
Shame on you ESPN. They have somehow begun to think that they are suppose to control College football instead of just simply broadcasting it. (edited due to some really poor spelling and grammar).
Everything occurring is ESPN driven.

I can't agree with this take more....... College football has definitely taken on a sleeze factor. Money has corrupted the game.

Well, the game has been corrupted by the money since at least the '60s. It's just that ESPN has raised the bar on corruption by the vast amounts of money they're willing to offer. Should be interesting to watch. If they actually attempt to go to 4 super-conferences and freeze out everyone else, the arguments for anti-trust litigation just get that much more solid. =Bob

I hate to even think it but If things were to go really south we should then work on being the top hoops program in the nation and bring back Volleyball.

True. The dollar factor has been at work for a long, long time. Its just become such a huge business now-a-days that its hard to hide anymore. In reality, how many players do you know that would turn down a raise from $9 million to $20 million a year to stay with their favorite home-town franchise? It shouldn't be surprising this is happening. Fans love tradition in their sports, but money rules.

This has become so disgusting...even fans of the power schools are beginning to question the sanity of all this.

I thought the idea was the the Pac 10 wants to expand so they can get their own TV network (like the Big 10) and the Big 10 wants to expand to Missouri and Nebraska so they can charge those regions more for the Big 10 channel. As a sports fan I think ESPN is a positive (and to be honest, I don't watch it much, but I do follow the website a lot). A good example is the World Cup.

Who do you think those new networks will sell their games to? There simply aren't that many teams with a national following. Obviously they'll do a lot better than The Mt., but I think The Mt.'s model will be seen when there are national games as we now see on VS. =Bob =Bob

I think greed has been around for 100 years but the advent of ESPN has resulted in a geometrical acceleration of the greed. And the toothpaste may be out of the tube, unfortunately. I will say that in one of his several excellent pieces lately, Stuart Mandel has predicted that if a 4-conference/16-member animal replaces the BCS that Congress is going to step in. According to Mandel, at that point it won't just be Orrin Hatch complaining. Rather, Congress will threaten the new big, big boys with elimination of their tax exempt status if changes aren't made. Faced with a scuttlebutt like that, I can't see them eliminating the BCS. And that's good for SDSU because the MWC has earned a tiny profit from the BCS recently.

I think college football has been sleazy for a long long time. It is just getting more sleazy. This. Except in the past the sleaze was on a much lower level like the old "booster buys car for star" type of sleaze. Now, the sleaze is institutional as in " network executive buys college president, AD and HC really big salary increase" type of sleaze. At least old school sleaze resulted in the player actually getting something out of the deal.

At this point, how is what is occurring any different from businesses merging to control more of the market? If CFB wants to act like a business, they should be treated like a business. Wonder how fast they would back off if they were told they had to pay wages to all their "student-athletes" and pay taxes on all those billions of dollars in tv contracts?
