So I was telling a "friend of a friend" that I have been really excited about SDSU basketball this year. Little did I know he was a BYU alum. How do you think he reacted?
Well, I'll tell you. I think he reacted exactly how most BYU fans would. He said SDSU is overrated and there is no way they will beat BYU this year, he expects a three game sweep.
While I am basically laughing inside, I just tell him I am looking forward to the game next week and while I hope for a win, I expect us to split games this year.
Not sure why I am even bringing this up, but there is something about the stereotypical BYU fan that I find entertaining. It's like there is some sort of "group think" thing going on.
I hope we spank them by 20+ in Provo. I can't wait.

SDSU overrated? A double digit win in "The Pit." That is one of the toughest places to play in the NCAA. I think we are as good as the ranking.

NO ONE thinks SDSU is over rated. Your team scares me to death. Your inside game might foul out our bigs in about 2 minutes. This game is SO intriuguing because these teams are so different. The best possible scenario is if BOTH teams are on, and SDSU does what it does, and BYU does what they do, and I honestly don't know who would win that game? I'm with you. I think that they split regular season games, and if they meet in the conference tourney championship game (which I think they do) in Vegas...that is going to be awesome. (It will be a home game for you, cuz Vegas hates us too!) Watched the SDSU @ UNM. Impressive win. When you have your outside/inside game going...there is no weakness.

Fallacy.
You're using an experience with 1 BYU fan to support a stereotype you already hold. If your experience with this fan had been different--let's say he said the teams would split, or that even SDSU had the upper hand--you would either forget about it or consider it an anomaly, because it didn't fit your pre-conceived opinion of BYU fans.
The fact is, every fanbase, not just BYU, has groupthink about their own team and its opponents.
As a BYU fan, I don't believe SDSU is overrated. Between BYU and SDSU, overall I'd give SDSU the edge, although not by a great margin. SDSU is the better overall defensive team and the better rebounding team on both ends of the floor. BYU gets the edge in shooting, 3 pt shooting and offensive discipline. Defense is more consistent from game to game, so that's primarily where I give SDSU the edge. If BYU is on from the 3 pt line, that would even things up, and then anything can happen.
With me and Hugh, you now have 2 BYU fans who don't think SDSU is overrated, twice as many as you have encountered that think they are.

As big as detractors as we've had in the nation have been the other of the 'big 4' UNLV and New Mexico fans were talking tons of $#!+ and EXPECTING victories. Time to humble another group.
