BTW, I know a bit about Bay Area HS football but nothing about what happens up there in Santa Rosa. Does anybody know about the caliber of HS football up there? I played high school football in Santa Rosa for Santa Rosa High which is in the same league as Carillo. High school ball is pretty good up in the North Bay just really underrated because all the the focus is on the South and East Bay. Just to give you an idea of some of the players that come out of there, I played linebacker with Koa Misi who was a three year starter at Utah and was the 44th pick in the draft and is starting as a rookie for the Dophins. Ray Mataluga the linebacker from USC who is now in the league is also in the NCS (the conference that Carillo is in) and there are usually 2-6 legit DI recruits from Sonoma County. On top of that you have SRJC one of the best JC football programs in the state up there and tons of kids go play there and go on to play DI so I would say high school football in the North Bay is pretty legit. If Long and the rest of the staff are recruiting him I would say is pretty good. I also agree that he is probably being recruted more as an athlete that they can redshirt and plug in somewhere later. I also played football in Santa Rosa - at Piner High (same conference) at what looks like the same time the person I'm quoting did, as I also played against Misi. Few of our players go straight to D-1, many of them use the SRJC to get there. For example, my high school QB (Greg Alexander) went to the JC, set a whole bunch of records, then went to Hawai'i and became the starter until he blew his knee out against La Tech. Going into that game he was #2 or #3 in passer efficiency in the nation. My older brother is the D-line coach at the Cardinal Newman, which is the best team in the conference. So he coached against Atoe. Said he was pretty impressive. Tough kid with some athletic ability. So the talent is there, but I'd say it's just not as dense as other areas in CA.

Another good get. More reason to think that unlike with the changeover in head coaches previously, this time recruiting isn't going to suffer in year one.

True East Bay has more DI recruits. Look at Grant High in Sac they have 4 legit DI prospects this year. But Rosa and Sonoma County usually have a few every year and there is pretty good football up there. Also bummer that Greg blew his knee out. I played with him in the all star game and he was a great QB

Just got some inside info...
We got the verbal, but if USC or Fresno State offer, he's going there.

This guy is perfectly suited for the Warrior position in Rocky's Defense.

This seems like a strange commit since we are still in the hunt for Brandon Wright . You're assuming Rocky plans to use him at running back. Looking at the video, I have a feeling he's the kind of kid Rocky sees potentially playing the Aztec position on D. BTW, I know a bit about Bay Area HS football but nothing about what happens up there in Santa Rosa. Does anybody know about the caliber of HS football up there? From the video, he was a man among boys. He looks like linebacker material to me.

Just got some inside info... We got the verbal, but if USC or Fresno State offer, he's going there. You know kids can go to where they want to, it's a free country. He may even have friends at these schools, but I don't get this. If you're going to stay in California, and not going to any school north of the central valley, why not go to the hottest football school in So Cal? If he's good, he'll get his playing time. If the role was reverse, no way would he consider State. Let me see, USC: another year without a bowl game and on probation, and Fresneck: Beat down by NI in bowl game and although moving to the MWC, will not be as strong as State in the coming years. If he doesn't want to be here, why not wait for those schools? Leave the spot open for those who really want to play for here. We don't want to keep him from his "dream" school.

My daughter goes to school with Sam. He's a great kid and even has sung in the mens choir. He's a great team player.

Santa Rosa here as well. Off of Brush Creek.

I just hope if it is State he wants to go to, that stays the path. I would hate to hear that we lost out on someone else because he choose to change his commitment.

Good! He can get a degree in Music or Theatre Arts while Coach Long trains him to be the next Brian Urlacher.

He looks good from the video. Looks like an athlete who can play on either side of the ball and we can't have enough of those.
