Hiring a coach that is willing to "grow old on the job." Or a coach that has that fire in him to move on up the ladder, to the upper echelon of coaching jobs?
Of course Rocky has to do well to stick around, but like he said, this is his last job and he's hanging it up. We'll see if he still has that drive in him as an HC, even though he once said that he didn't want to be an HC anymore.
I believe that Rocky will do well, but I'm just hoping that he still has that drive in him if the going gets tough. Will he still have that motivation to right the ship? The same motivation that maybe a hungrier coach might have. A coach that wants to move on up to the upper echelon. Someone that wants to prove to people that he still has it.
I know were all tired of being a stepping stone, but it is a reality for now. If we hit a snag, or have a down year, I just hope he still has the same fire that he showed in that great press conference.
Only time will tell.

Rocky wouldn't have agreed to get interviewed by several other schools if he didn't have the drive.

Rocky wouldn't have agreed to get interviewed by several other schools if he didn't have the drive. Could have been a negotiating thing, knowing that the SDSU job was opening up. Who knows, maybe a backup plan. Besides, I'm just hoping he still has the same fire to coach when the going gets tough, since this is his last leg. I know he's a competitor, but when you hit a certain point in coaching, like your last tour, you never know. I'm not saying it's going to happen. It was just a concern I wanted to express.

I think that the two years off from being a Head Coach has re-energized the Rock.
He's fired up and ready to go. New Mexico's administration became a problem that wore on him. It sapped his energy and enthusiasm. SDSU's administration just woke up two years ago and has this university headed up the ladder when it comes to athletics.
Rocky will thrive at this school in this environment. I don't expect him to be here as HC in 2020, but I think he's got a good 5-6 years left in him. (Maybe more - who knows?)
