Looks like we are focusing on the middle of the field like Hoyer said we would.

From what the draft analyst are saying it looks like we are getting hitters and not really guys who are solid at their positions (except for the pitchers of course).

Here is the best run down of the Players the Padres drafted. It is the blog of the Padres Paul DePodesta. The Padres 4th round selection stole 68 bases in 93 games and their 5th round selection stole 104 bases in 125 college games. I guess they are serious about running.

Paul DePodesta on Rico Noel: Possibly more importantly, we think he's the best defensive centerfielder in the entire draftI think they value defense. They have drafted pitchers, a SS, a 2B, and a CF. Drafting up the middle as one exec said teams should.

Sure looks like it and I love it that we are so aggressive on the base pads this year.

No way our second pick stays at short a move to third is most likely

If we can sign John Barbato and AJ Vanegas that would be amazing but it will be extremely hard, Barbato's a top 100 pick for sure if not for his strong commitment to Florida, and Venegas is probably a top 50 pick if not for his extremely strong commitment to Stanford it will be really hard to sign him especially.

This is what the Padres should be doing with these picks. Take guys who are good but fall due to signing issues. Then pay them well over "slot". Even if we sign one of three it is better than picking 3 players who deserve to be drafted in those positions. If they value their education we can offer them a scholarship as part of the inducement. Paul DePodesta on these guys: It was time for some upside! Most of these guys could be difficult to sign, as their talent dictates a higher round selection, but we felt that it was the right time to take them.

Long time no talk boys....decided to jump back into the fray. Some notes/observations/inside information so far.....Keyvius Sampson at Eugene, along with Matt Lollis, are legitimate prospects. Neither pitcher has given up a run so far in two starts. Gyorko is hitting over .400 so far early on in the season. Vanegas threw a bullpen session and I think there's hope the Padres can sign him by offering a lot over slot value. Karsten Whitson is expected to sign within the next two or three weeks to a hefty bonus. His innings will be monitored very, very closely. On Drew Cumberland, the Padres still view him as a shortstop for now. His bat will carry him regardless. Donavan Tate has struggled in rookie ball so far, not entirely unexpected, but there are concerns about our other outfield selection, Everett Williams. Rumblings that he lacks work ethic and doesn't have the will or desire to improve his game. Time will tell there.
