What is your opinion so far, up to this point in the season regarding the MWC officiating for the basketball games?
Are they as bad as ever? Getting better? In the past, I thought they called too much ticky-tack fouls, and it hurt all our teams in the NCAA's as it became more physical, all our collective players didn't know how to adjust becuase of the officiating style differences.
Just wondering what your take is on how the games have been called up to this point?

Sans that referee vending machine next to the bible buy-back store in P ovo, Utetah, the refering has been as bad as that fumble gate replay when Mr. B. J. Williams made the play of the game to win it for the Aztecs.
Let's interview an Orem resident. "Sir, you were at the basketball game last evening and what was your opinion of the game?"

Actually, what I've seen to date has been pretty fair. There haven't been many fumbles, so that probably explains it. And we have yet to play in Provestan, so we'll see what happens then.
There were 6 technicals last night during the UNLV/SDSU game, but I thought they were all warranted. A couple of guys almost came up swinging. If the refs had let it go much more, someone would've gotten decked. Also, the technicals had almost no impact on the game, since they were all off-setting and resulted in zero free-throws or change of possessions. The biggest impact was on Willis, I believe, when he had to sit for a while because of three fouls.

It was actually Chase that sat down, which hurt UNLV, if it had been Willis it would have hurt them, he has been horrible as of late. Must have hurt his fingers on his girlfriends neck or something.

Stanback for Vegas had three fouls and sat out the rest of the first half.

Having watched a few MWC games this season of other teams, it seems slightly improved. bekays - My hope is that there are zero controversial calls in our two match ups this year. History has proven otherwise though, and these two teams are too good to have a bone-headed call decide a game. Am I asking too much to have a zero tolerance for bone head calls in our games?

I actually think it has been pretty fair. Maybe those watching on TV could correct me, but Billy White's goaltending didn't look like one (couldn't tell if it hit the glass first) and as standiego mentioned, Chase had a layup 'blocked' that looked like a goaltending. Sure the official miss some calls (Billy getting pushed on an ally-oop early in the game) but noting outragous.
Also, Chance Stanbeck was probably going to sit with the 2 first half fouls anyway (he fouled Leonard prior to the technicals) so the 3rd foul didn't really affect his playing time as he didn't get his 4th until late in the game. Plus, he was shooting so bad it was better for SDSU to have him on the court.

With the exception of an incorrect out-of-bounds call under our basket in the first half and a couple of travels that weren't called, I thought they did a good job.

Overall, I think the basketball officials have been better this year as compared to the past. However, I reserve final judgment as we are only 3 games into the conference season.

The goaltending call against White was very close. They showed the replay several times and in the end it did look like a blown call. But that was with the help of super slow replay. I don't begrudge the officials missing that call because it was so close.
However, why did it take them 3 years to figure out what technicals to call on that first go-round?

While I don't have a huge problem with officiating, aside from bouts of incosistent calls.
It is still beyond me that officials this year can use video evidence at any time to check if a player is throwing elbows because it is an area of emphasis but they still cannot use video evidence to see if a shot beat the shot clock or not.
I remember last year that a missed shot clock call could have cost SDSU in their MWC Tourney game against NM and then a missed shot clock the next day vs UNLV was to the benefit of SDSU. I thought for sure that rule would have been changed but it has not.
Terrible.

It's amazing how much better the officiating is when you're winning Let's hope there's no home cooking when we get to Provostan this week.

I think basketball is maybe the hardest sport to officiate, and that they do a pretty good job considering that. Sure there are some bad calls, but I think they go both ways for the most part, except for in Provo obviously.
