I was just thinking about this game last night (as I was standing in centerfield and watching my softball team get pummeled... again). Long before Stras packed 'em into TGS, the New York Yankees came to town for one last tuneup before the 1998 season began -- 2 against the Padres (a preview of things to come) and 1 to close out at SDSU on 3/30/98. That was the first time I ever saw an overflow crowd for, really, anything on campus aside from graduation at Aztec Bowl. This was the resurgence of the Yankees empire -- Jeter was in place, and they had just come off their first or second world title in a string that was to come. I had forgotten about the controversy with Hideki coming into town. What I do recall is that an Aztec hit a homerun, and so did Straw. But it was the surreal aspect of it that really got to you during those few hours: Holy crap! The New York Yankees, and their Murderer's Row history, are out on the field here at SDSU, right before my eyes!! Here's the pre and post-game articles from the NYT. It's about what you'd suspect for a pre-season article. I tried finding something from the UT's search engine, with no effect. Perhaps the Daily Aztec? Somewhere in some box in my house I have photos from this game, which I will try to find. www.nytimes.com/1998/03/29/sports/baseball-spring-training-yankees-harrowing-ride-comes-to-an-uneventful-end.html?scp=1&sq=Yankees+Aztecs&st=nytwww.nytimes.com/1998/03/31/sports/baseball-irabu-wins-but-many-questions-remain.html?scp=2&sq=Yankees+Aztecs&st=nyt

Did the NCAA change the rules to prevent college teams from playing the spring training clubs? I know it's been a few years since SDSU has played the Padres...

The thing I remember most is the Yankee first base coach saying that he had never been so mailigned in his life. Hang in there, Matt

The thing I remember most is the Yankee first base coach saying that he had never been so mailigned in his life. Hang in there, Matt That was Jose Cardinal. There were a few students down the first base line ripping into him. He finally stared them down and they took a seat. They guy was just yoked even as a coach. As for the college-pro exhibitions. Don't know. They were fun to go to, though. Smallish crowds at The Q meant you got to sit wherever you wanted near homeplate. Great chance for college kids to play on big-league field, too. USC used to play the Dodgers every year at Dodger Stadium during Rod Dedeaux's days.

No, they can and do still play occasional college vs MLB games during spring training but they primarily happen between the Florida schools (Florida St, Miami) and Grapefruit League teams due to logistics. The primary reasons SDSU played the Yankees are the Yankees were opening the regular season on the West Coast and Rick Bay was AD at the time and he had a working relationship (i.e. one time Executive Vice President and COO of the New York Yankees) with George Steinbrenner
