Football season is right around the corner and for Aztec fans, dreams of reaching a bowl game. We're moving closer with second year coach Brady Hoke. Could this be the year? The activities the week before bowl games make it special for the players. In 1986 the Aztecs made their lone appearance in the Holiday Bowl and one of the activities leading up to the game was a tour of an aircraft carrier that was in port. Here's a shot of some of the players on the deck with downtown San Diego in the background. Recognize anyone? ERNIE

I'd like to be able to have at least one memory of a bowl game, hopefully this is the year.

I always thought our biggest problem in the '80s and '90s was that our DBs were undersized. This picture really drives that point home. Check out the size of our starting safety, front-and-center.

Wasn't Brady Hoke's brother a position coach for that team? Or was it the following year? I do know that was the Todd Santos era.

Ahh, memories.
-What a game it was! -We should not have pooch-kicked to allow Iowa good field position. -I had an angry girlfriend (now wife of 16 years) because I arrived very late for the Journey concert she had tix for.

Here are my Aztec Bowl Game Memories... Freedom Bowl. I had the flu, but I went to the game anyway. Took the Aztec Train up and back (from Oceanside). After having that pretty good lunch I went straight to the nurses station at the stadium - I was running a 103 degree fever! I laid down for about an hour and loaded up on ibuprofen and various cold medications. By game time I almost felt human. Human enough that when T.C. Wright though he was Willie Mays Hayes or something I screamed at him pretty loudly (yes, I'm still pissed at T.C. Wright for that boneheaded play, I still believe that the change in momentum there cost the Aztecs the game). I had to re-load on the meds after halftime (I was starting to feel pretty awful again), but by the time I was on the train headed home I only felt bad (as opposed to feeling like I was on death's door like I did before the game). I had the opportunity to spend some time talking with Chet waiting for the train and on the train. He was really cool and I've had a lot of respect for him ever since. My Las Vegas Bowl memories are different - it was the wind, stupid!! I remember one pass where Russell threw the ball, the wind immediately picked up and carried it out of bounds. The ref called intentional grounding - to which I replied that he must have been psychic because no one other than Russell knew where that pass was intended to go! Then there was that punt with a negative net because it went almost straight up in the air. It was that kind of day. When I got back to the hotel I had to wash my hair three times to get all of the salt and sand out of it (it was like I had a whole can of aqua net in my hair)! Ahhhhh - memories! Time for some new ones.

Freedom Bowl - how did we lose that one with the talent we had? Oh ya the defensive coach was really bad.
Vegas Bowl great game - the worst wearther you could think of in Las Vegas. My son and I were picking sand out of our ears for days.
Holliday Bowl another great game but the most disappointing of all.
I went to all of them. I hope I can go to a few more before I have to leave this earth. At 63 time may begetting short.

Holiday Bowl in '86 taught me what being an Aztec fan is all about. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Saw Iowa come out of the tunnel and thought we had no chance. We take a lead late and begin to think a win is possible. The weak kickoff and poor coverage allows Iowa to get close and I start thinking we're doomed. See Alfred Jackson racing in from the end on the field goal try and realize he is going to block it! What? He missed it! Looks like he jumped over the ball. Amazing, crushing loss.
Freedom Bowl was a nice quick road trip. Thought it was going to become an annual thing.
Vegas Bowl the wind was the worse I've ever sat in. Had sand in my ears for a week. Curry for North Carolina was pretty good, but we could have won.
Maybe this year will be chapter four.

What I remember of the train trip - well, at least my least favorite memory - is the very long wait in the train station after the game with a ton of very depressed Aztec fans. The ride up was a ton of fun. I also remember not being impressed with the "tailgater" in whatever room of the Big A it was in. I remember comparing later tailgaters such as the USuckC tailgaters up there as being so much better in comparison. =Bob

Pasadena Bowl in 1969. One of the best Aztec teams ever! Listened to it on the radio. The announcers spent the entire game whining about how poor little Boston U was being beat up by big, bad, SDSU. They never stopped complaining about how many more students we had than BU had. =Bob

What I remember of the train trip - well, at least my least favorite memory - is the very long wait in the train station after the game with a ton of very depressed Aztec fans. The ride up was a ton of fun. The wait for the trip back didn't bother me so much since I had a chance to talk with Chet for a good part of that time. I thought it was good, but not as good as it could have been. I was just starting to really get sick at that point and lost some of my apetite. I was starving when we went in, but the flu really started to hit and after I ate half my meal I just wasn't hungry anymore (I did like the food, but the flu just started kicking my ass). Of course, it's hard to say how acute my sense of taste was at that point being that sick... I thought it was a really fun trip overall, and I'm glad I went. I'm still bummed that I was that sick, though. (Although it does make for one heck of a story - I had no business being there with a 103 degree fever and all, but I'm an Aztec fan since birth, so there you go!)
