In the Duh category of importance is Ryan Lindley. However, I think there is at least one other essential player: Abel Perez.
Perez still isn't listed on the roster but with Southwestern College's spring semester just about over, I sure hope that will change in the next few weeks. Consider these stats.
Checking my trusty Phil Steele's, this is how many of the 119 other DIA schools had a 2009 FG percentage worse than SDSU's: 9. This is how many of those 119 schools kicked less FGs than SDSU did in 2009: 12. This is how many of those 119 schools' kickoff teams left their defense with a shorter average field to defend than did SDSU's: 5.
The player presently listed as our #1 placekicker couldn't beat out the guy most responsible for the terrible stats above. That ain't good. Actually, that's scary. And the guy behind him is a walk-on who none of us ever heard of until the spring camp roster was posted.
Bottom line in my view is that getting Perez in a red and black uniform very soon will be crucial to our chances of gaining bowl eligibility. Do any of you think anybody else is as important as Lindley and Perez?

Agreed, and I believe the most significant issue involves your final stat regarding short fields after kickoffs. We need to stand an applaud touchbacks.

You and I have both been concerned by the conspicuousness of the dearth of information out of the coaches mouth on the jc kicker and his absence from the 3-deep roster released that had true freshman and jucos not on campus.
I would imagine a bunch of talented red shirt and true freshman will play special teams, that in-itself will help kickoff cover, but Perez's leg would make a huge difference.

Typical JC recruit. Ya just never know till he's actually on the field, then ya don't know until the school year is over whether he'll stick academically. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

Proven - We need Vincent Brown for 13 games this year. Your question has now been answered...

Agree 100% - Perez is one of the keys. There has never been a field goal kicker for the Aztecs that has the type of leg this kid has. Lets just hope he doesn't have Trakas or Holt disease. However, this kid is worth it just for the kickoffs alone.
Sampson, Brown, and Uamolo (sp?) and a yet to be found running back, NG, and O-line are also key players we can't do without if we expect to go bowling.

Proven - We need Vincent Brown for 13 games this year. Your question has now been answered... Pretty much. Everyone is crazy who doesn't think his loss for the last half of the season was a BIG reason for the second half collapse. The guy was one of the best receivers in the country before he went down.

Lets wait until Perez dawns the red and black for at least a single game before we anoint him as one of the two players on the team that we can't succeed without.

I think that the most important players on this team are the 5 guys who line up on the offensive line. If they play well, Lindley will have a great year, Sullivan/Kazee/Hillman/etc will have good years, and field position won't be that important this year. (Well, at least in the sense that winning 7 games and going to a bowl game will make this a successful season)

Proven - We need Vincent Brown for 13 games this year. Your question has now been answered... Quite true. The kid was a great find by Chuck's staff and if he stays healthy this year figures to be drafted in about the third round next April. He's a definite weapon and if our line can give Lindley any kind of time, I think Missouri is going to find that out since he has Big 12 type talent.

Accuracy? I hope we get to see that in August. Got fingers and toes crossed that he appears as scheduled.
