My first thought was, too bad they seemed like a nice couple. But with further thought it isn't too hard to see what is going on.
Gore is heavily invested in Carbon Trading Schemes which are becoming a shaky investment. Legally separating their assets gives Gore the chance to dump a bunch of those assets with cover. The "couple" gets a measure of protection from the pending problems without close scrutiny for dumping the assets that will be worth squat when the bottom drops out of the AGW trading schemes.
I could be wrong but I think Gore will begin to dump assets related to carbon trading. He sees the writing on the wall. He will have to find another way to acheive his goal of riding the world of the enternal combustion engine. A goal he had long before Carbon came along to be his lever.
