As an Aztecs Fan, I was frustrated that Gwynn didn't use Strass late in the end of the MWC Tournament when 1) SDSU was not a lock and 2) A MWC win would equal a better seed - BUT, I understood why and gotta give him credit for doing what was best for Strasburg and not his program.

Saw this on my twitter feed, and it's a good read. Nice pub for Coach Gwynn.

That's because Gywnn did what Boras wanted him to do. That is all. Look Gywnn can give good advice because he has gone through it but that is not his fricking job (OK a small part of his job). He job is to put together a TEAM that will win. He seems to suck at that part of his job. I hope things work out better next year. Too much talent on that team not to win.

Yeah, nice but...I note that USD, UCSD and PLNU are all at their respective division championships while SDSU is at home apparently kicking kids off scholarship and rebuilding. Kind of frustrating when you realize what a hot bed of baseball San Diego is and who has the best facilities in San Diego. Yet, with all that we have been an "also ran" for all of Tony's tenure with the exception of last year when we had Stras. I have always been a huge TG fan. Loved him as a point guard. Loved his work ethic with the Padres, making himself a golden glover. Impressed with his entire baseball career and everything he has done for SDSU facility wise. But, as a coach? Does not match his other accomplishments. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

Tony has been able to bring in donations. He creates visability for SDSU. I think he is learning more each year. I say give him time.

Tony Gwynn hasn't got the job done yet, but I like him and believe he will eventually get the job done. And really, no one should care because it's baseball. The sport doesn't make money and it's never on TV except for a couple weeks in June. Men's baseball is basically women's softball - a nice little sport you watch for 10 minutes before you head to the grocery store. Quick, without going to Google name the two teams that played for the college world series championship last year?? Name four teams that played at Ohama last year?? And let he who has attended more than five Aztec games, or can name more than three current players (without first going to goaztecs.com), cast the first stone. It's all about men's football and basketball. The rest isn't worth the time or effort, especially considering the state of our athletic program.

Dumb argument Basically that means the AD should never fire any "non-revenue" coach because they can't get the job done. Men's soccer. Who cares it's a non-revenue sport. Either you are getting the job done or you are not and frankly Tony is not getting the job done. Can't have it both ways.

Because unlike in football and men's basketball, with the job HE holds winning really doesn't matter? (What matters is that Tony's name brings free publicity to SDSU, because Tony doesn't need the money and he's an alum he works cheap and he never gets the school in trouble with the NCAA - not that any baseball coach anywhere ever does.) Honestly, I think that's what you're saying and that's fine with me since I agree baseball really doesn't matter. That doesn't mean that when it comes to making kids into better players that Tony isn't mediocre at best, however. (BTW, how objective is Scott Boras? Not much, I would say.)

No, I'm saying Tony Gwynn hasn't got the job done but I like him and believe eventually he will get it done. The pressure of winning is less in all non-revenue sports so I don't care if Gwynn has more time. My opinion is the same for other non-revenue sports - as long as the coach runs a good program and I believe the team will eventually turn the corner. We have not become a force like Cal State Fullerton, but it's not like Gwynn has been a total failure. In his first six years Gwynn has been named the MWC coach of the year, we've won the MWC regular season title, and last year we went to the NCAA's for the first time since 1991. That said, I agree with Miggie that it seems Gwynn should be getting more from his players.

That is how I've felt about the baseball program for the longest too but didn't want to say anything since some people might actually care. Having hall of famer Tony Gwynn as the coach is nice and I personally don't really care if the baseball team ever does really well. Now if the basketball team started to suck I would start howling for Fish's blood like everyone else. Just like I'm desperately hoping every season that the football team will turn the corner. Basketball and football are just more entertaining. There's a reason why college football in America is nearly a pro sport while college baseball is an afterthought.

Wish we were LSU back when Skip Bertman was coaching.
