Smith wants to reassure Republicans in Congress that they can act with impunity if they bash immigrants — of all kinds. Not simply an opponent of illegal immigration, he also supports limiting legal immigration.
This is the Tancredo wing of the Republican Party, a wing that day by day, month by month, year by year is causing the party to move closer and closer to the Know Nothing Party of the mid-19th Century.
All this immigrant bashing does is force cultural groups that are at least somewhat right of center move to the party that doesn't engage in demagoguery.
But then, I suppose it plays well in rural areas, but the rural areas slowly depopulate while the bigots continue to gain more power while becoming more and more politically marginalized.
