The Padres have said that Latos will only pitch 150 innings this year. They have recently changed that to 150-175 pitches in one interview.
At a 150 inning limit, at current usage, Latos would be unavailable for the last 39 games.
At a 175 inning limit, at current usage, Latos would be unavailable for the last 18 games.
Should the Padres:
1. Use Latos as they have to try to get to the playoffs. 2. Skip Latos spot in the rotation where possible to extend his service. 3. Wait until Chris Young's future on this year's team is known to decide on any action. 4. Switch his and Stauffer's role on the team to limit his innings and make him available for the playoffs. 5. Roll his start back a day whenever possible via off days. This would extend him a week or two. 6. limit him to 5 innings a start and keep Stauffer in position to pitch 3 innings every time Latos starts. This would extend him beyond the end of the season if they go with the 175 inning limit. 7. Some combination of the above.
I think some combination of 5 and 6 would be good. keep pushing his starts back a day, when possible, and remove him from games earlier than normal, in certain games. Getting Stauffer back allows flexibility.

2, 5 and six to some sort of degree.
Ultimately stretch out his starts between now and August-September.

IF...and that's a BIG IF...the Padres are in contention come late July/August...dude will be in the line-up! They simply can't take him out. Talk about a fan revolt!
They have to do something so 7 it is for me

Latos is on pace for 190 IP, one thing they can do is use the all star break, and make it so he throws on 7th and 21rst, shedding some projected innings, and giving him a long rest for his arm

They could go to a 6 man rotation in September with call-ups.

Latos will pitch Thursday in Chicago but the Padres will use the off day Monday to push his next start back to Saturday (8 days rest) against the Phillies, according to some tweets I have seen. He skips the DBacks at home to face the more challenging Phillies at home.
From that Saturday his next start can also be adjusted because 5 days later is an off day (Thursday). By pushing him one or two days, the Padres will have him face Colorado and the Giants, instead of Colorado and the Dodgers. By pushing him 3 or 4 days he will face the Dodgers and the Giants.
The Padres will only have one more off day after that. That is Monday September 20.
