SDSU is #1 in the nation in block % (# of block / 2 pt FG attempts). It is amazing in that we don't have 7ft+ Mutumbo-type shot blocker. kenpom.com/team.php?team=San%20Diego%20St. We are also 5th in the nation in 2pt FG%, which really isn't a surprise. But, the most significant stat is that we are shooting 69.4% from the FT line...(139th in the country) which is a huge improvement over last year (61.9%, ranked 333 out of 345) kenpom.com/team.php?team=San%20Diego%20St.&y=2010Thomas has gone from about 53% to 64% FT shooting.

Great stats. If we can get and stay above 70% in the FT category, that would be more than adequate, especially given the number of FT rebounds we get. (Thank Bill for pointing out the importance of that stat -- it's pretty much the equivalent of shooting 80% from the line.)
As for the shot blocks, no, we don't have an active 7-footer (though we do have Brian Carlwell, but that's not really the same thing.) However, we have several long, athletic, active, smart players. Thomas is a defensive force. He has great footwork in the paint, defensively. That contributes to a lot of blocks. So does White. And Kawhi is Kawhi. Also, when you put the three together, you sometimes get guys teaming up on D. A guy will go up for a shot, try fade away from Kawhi, only to fade into Thomas. Pick your poison.
Also, Tapley is -- inch-for-inch -- the best shot blocker on the team. And when he doesn't block shots, he messes with the shooter and changes the arc of the shot consistently.
Like rebounding, blocking shots isn't about being 7'. It's about being active, alert and energetic. It's about having great footwork in combination with positioning and leaping ability.

Thomas is a great shot blocker, no doubt about that, especially since he is only 6'9"

You are reading the stats incorrectly.
We get the least amount of our offensive shots blocked (4%), which is a reflection on the number of putbacks that we get. We block 13.3% of shots on the defensive end, which is 36th best in the nation.

With Thomas it's all about his excellent timing. Same reason we win practically every tip to start the game.

Don't know your age, or knowledge of basketball, but back in the 60's and 70's there was a player who was an extremely great shot blocker who played for the Boston Celtics. Maybe, someone told you about him. If not, his name was Bill Russell, and he not only blocked shots, but played lights out defense even against the likes of Chamberlin who was 7 ft. Russell was Only 6'9", and psyched out many players with his skill, and knowledge of his opponent. Like many have said, it takes good footwork, agility, and determination to be a good defender and shot blocker. Even guys 6'4" can do it if they want to bad enough.

If this team can shoot 70% at the line then I will be absolutely THRILLED!!!! It will be that much more difficult to beat this team if they can shoot a decent percentage at the line.

Its suprising that our bench minutes are quite a bit less than the team average, we are ranked #246.

Its suprising that our bench minutes are quite a bit less than the team average, we are ranked #246. Not to me. Here are a few reasons why it isn't that surprising 1. We have played down to level of competition and haven't had a chance to play our bench late in a lot of games (Green Bay, IUPUI twice, USD we did but had a huge run in second half, Cal Poly, USF) 2. Our top 6 in our rotation is great and clearly much better players at this point in there career then the players deeper on the bench 3. Fisher rarely uses Carwell unless there is another big big on the floor like Sacre 4. The freshman have struggled and haven't earned minutes yet

I closing in quick on my 40th Birthday so while I never saw him play, I of course know about Russell (but to be honest, didn't realize he was only 6'9") Anyway, my point about Thomas was that he is a great shot blocker, despite being only 6'9" Typically when you think great shot blockers they are closer to 7' - current NBA players who were in college in the last few years like Thebeeth (7'3") or Oden (7'0").
