This is on topic because if Harbaugh goes there another good job opens up and Hoke to Michigan is more likely

Just because the job is open doesn't mean it's a good job, and it doesn't mean that he's gonna take it.
A guy like Harbaugh--with his track record, his reputation, and his name--is going to get plenty of opportunities. There is no need for him to jump at the first job that's offered to him.
He's been around the game a long time, both at the college and pro levels. And he's got one of the best resources for advice that anyone could possibly ask for: His brother, John, the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.
What's going to happen is they're going to compare notes and determine whether it's a job he should take on or not. John Harbaugh has very good organizational support, which makes the Ravens job very desirable and sets him up for success. They've got an owner (relatively new) that is committed to the team and will provide them with the necessary resources to be successful; they've got a GM in Ozzie Newsome that has an EXCELLENT track record (although they do tend to go a bit overboard with their evaluations); and they have a stable roster of solid players.
The 49ers are in complete chaos, and that starts at the top. The owners are not committed to providing the resources necessary to build a solid foundation. They've been through several different GM's in just the last 5 years. There's been a revolving door at the Offensive Coordinator position, and their stadium situation is very much up in the air. They have a handful of good players, but they have no offensive line to speak of, they don't know who their QB is, they've made some poor decisions in building their roster.......and a new head coach is going to step in and wonder what kind of team he's going to have to work with. They still have no GM in place after firing their most recent guy just a couple of months ago. The San Francisco 49ers are the very definition of instability right now. And it's going to be very difficult for them to hire a reputable coach given the conditions he'll be dealing with.
Jim Harbaugh can do better, and He likely knows it. Hell, the Michigan job might be a much better situation for him to step into, and if the itch to coach in the NFL really gets too unbearable, The League ain't going anywhere and there will be other opportunities down the road.
He may very well take the job if it's offered to him, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him pass this time around. There are far too many other problems in that organization that need to be ironed out to make that an attractive position for a Jim Harbaugh or Bill Cowher type......and yes, I put Harbaugh up there with Cowher because I think like Cowher, Jim will have his pick of jobs when it's all said and done.

I heard Dan Fouts on the Dan Patrick show about a month ago. Patrick was asking Dan about college QBs. Dan said Newton was very impressive, but that Luck would be the No. 1 player taken if he decided to come out. Later in the interview the topic of the Niners came up. Fouts said Singletary wasn't long for the NFL and the dream scenario for the Niners that the backroom NFL guys are buzzing about would be a package deal to bring Luck and Harbaugh to S.F.
Of course, that would be ridiculously difficult to pull off, but I first heard it from Fouts.
Just sayin'.

Just because the job is open doesn't mean it's a good job, and it doesn't mean that he's gonna take it. It was the best job in the NFL when Eddie DeBartolo owned the team. Now that DeBartolo's brother-in-law and his idiot son are running things, it's FUBAR. (Learned that acronym from Phil, to whom I am forever grateful.) As I said on another thread, I think Harbaugh is going to take the paltry $3M Stanford will pay to extend him and not go anywhere. I also think Jon Gruden will take the 49ers job since he's worked previously for the Niners and along with his tenure with the Raiders has lived in the Bay Area for a decade before. Gruden's stature in the NFL is such that he will demand that the Yorks keep their nose out of his business or he will simply leave as he did with the idiot owner across the Bay.

I predict Gruden is heading to Cleveland, to coach under his longtime mentor, Mike Holmgren (team President). It's been rumored. He is from Ohio originally, and comes from the Holmgren coaching tree.

I disagree.......this is very much ON topic, since what happens with the 49ers could have a direct and potentially devastating (from our perspective) effect on Brady Hoke and the Aztecs. If Harbaugh goes to the Niners, then Hoke and Les Miles become the top candidates to be the next head coach at Michigan, and I don't think that Les Miles would be all that anxious to leave LSU so easily.

SF is a good job though, they have a ton of talent, they have one of the best o-lines in football, 3 very good backs, a devoloping WR and a beast at TE, plus they have a great front 7. They just need a QB and a good coach and they are set to win 10+ games

Did you watch Sunday? Was Alex in the game?

Agree........Alex Smith is a mess. It is beyond incredulous to blame the mess that is the '49ers on Alex Smith. Did you watch Sunday? Was Alex in the game? I haven't heard anybody disagree that the 49ers need a quarterback. Perhaps not all the kid's fault because of the inconsistency, but for a number 1 overall..... he is a bust.

Perhaps not all the kid's fault because of the inconsistency, but for a number 1 overall..... he is a bust. He's had a different offensive coordinator every year he's been there. His best year was when he played for Norv Turner. Coincidence? I think not...... To blame any of this on Alex Smith is just plain ignorant.......... But back to the topic at hand: The 49ers are waiting to hire a GM before they hire a head coach. Which would pretty much eliminate anyone currently at the college level, since they could be well into January or early February by the time both processes are done. College coaches are on a much tighter timeline than that and can't wait that long. Which would likely rule Harbaugh out this time around.

This is - - - just barely and partly because my alter ego WLR has to leave town in a few minutes! - - - on-topic. If SF is in such a mess, why would Harbough feel he has to take their HC job? Better to stay in Palo Alto and bide his time. I guess somebody already said just about that. Oh, did I mention that this is just barely on-topic. AzWm

It was the best organization in all of professional sports when Eddie DeBartolo owned the team. Since his legal problems, and since his sister Denise DeBartolo-York and her husband John York connived to take the team away from him and completely shut him out out of spite, it's become one of the worst organizations in all of professional sports. I guess their son, Jed York, is trying to change that.......he recently was put in charge with his father stepping aside (at least somewhat), but we'll see. He's gonna have one helluva sales job to do if he wants to convince Harbaugh to leave Palo Alto.
