This morning on ESPN he addressed reports that Stanford's Harbaugh could be a candidate for the sure-to-be-open Carolina Panthers job.
Schefter said he doesn't see that happening because everything he has heard points to Harbaugh being Michigan's head coach next year.
Take that for what it's worth. Schefter is really an NFL guy rather than a college guy, but he's one of the most reliable "scoop" guys in the business.

Harbaugh may not be leaving Stanford at all: blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2010/12/24/stanford-football-updates-on-orange-bowl-ticket-sales-and-harbaughs-contract/If I was him, I would be thinking right now that given his relatively young age and The Tree's very limited football success, he could conceivably be their Joe Paterno and have a job for life. Like Paterno, Harbaugh visibly loves coaching so he isn't looking to get a huge cash score and then if he can't get it done to go to the broadcast booth. You can bet Harbaugh is also looking at U$C's NCAA problems and UDub's continued sub-mediocrity and thinking to himself there may not be any better time for Stanford football to become the dominant team in the Pac. Since Oregon loses 3/5 of its O-line and seven starters on defense, it could happen as soon as 2011. As to Michigan, if I was their AD, I would be thinking to MYSELF that if Harbaugh won't come, waiting a year to offer Brady Hoke would give Michigan another year to see if Rich-Rod can still get it done plus saving a year of salary. Hoke will still be available to Michigan then.

Why would he leave:
-money nope Stanfurd can match or exceed
-prestige? lol
-better conference-hardly the case, no discussion
-better quality of life- hell no, it's Michigan
-challange? no he got that at Stanford
-ala mater- ok, only reason.
Add, he is a sucess as a result largely of his mature staff, think those guys want to live in MI? Hell no.

East Palo Alto is a dump but immediately north, south and west of the campus is just beautiful country. As to money, if they bounce the salary up to $3M, that's NFL type money and if there are incentives like winning the Pac championship, winning a Rose Bowl, etc., with product endorsements and off-season speaking engagements, you have to think the guy could earn $4M per year. Granted the Peninsula isn't cheap to live in but with that kind of income you have to think the guy could live very, very comfortably. And BTW, I'd love to see him take the Michigan job so Brady won't be tempted to do so. However, I just sense that Harbaugh is going to stay at Stanford.

Another factor could be, along with others mentioned above, is that he grew up in Palo Alto and graduated from Palo Alto High School. Naw...that's not a factor.

Harbaugh may tire of trying to sell the games out to the sandals & socks crowd in tree hugger country! Harbaugh has definite issues with the lack of attendance at Stanford's home games. Stanford stadium is never sold out.

Just like us, look for those numbers to climb. Winning cures everything.

Harbaugh may tire of trying to sell the games out to the sandals & socks crowd in tree hugger country! My nephew played for Harbaugh at Stanford. Referring to the folks that he played with and for (the fans) in such terms does not reflect well. He suffered through three coaches and several injuries during his career at Stanford because he loved his teammates and the fans.

Can't really argue with any of your reason's, but Michigan is still the winningest program in the history of college football, and one of the top five jobs in the country. The "Big House" on a Saturday rivals anything in the country.

If you don't realize that Michigan is a far better job than Stanford, then you're blind. Harbaugh is already pissed about the lack of fans that show up to Stanford's games. That would never be an issue at The Big House.

Thats fine, but the 106,000 that do show up look real nice on TV. If we keep winning, THIS is why we need to stay at Qualcomm and not undersell ourselves with an on-campus stadium that seats only 40k.

That would never be an issue at The Big House. Ever notice Stanford is very rarely involved with violation issues with the NCAA? Having played there, Jim knows what goes on behind the scenes at Michigan and has actually expressed it albeit in somewhat of a subtle tone. Also, not to mention the Cardinal recently upgraded Stanford Stadium to meet the attendance needs for the future. JMHO.

There is no reason someone can't win as much at Stanford in the 2010s as they can at Michigan. Michigan is a great school, Stanford might be the best school in the country. He's going to be able to get the best of the smart kids that can ball, and can round out his roster with some special admits. since they are winning, is it even a question of where to go if you are a good athlete with an admissible score?

With the Michigan AD not committing to Rodreguez while in the middle of a 6 year contract, this must create some recruiting issues. If the AD announces to put his decision off a year then surely some big recruits will go elsewhere. The bottom line is that the coach is history on Jan 2, it seems to me. Otherwise the AD would have created damage for no payoff.

We can refer to another school and it's athletes and fans however we want. Just because your nephew played over there doesn't mean we have to be nice to them. A cousin of mine played DB at UNLV, another cousin played at Nevada and another at Oregon State should I demand everyone on this board to be nice to those 3 schools? Hell, no!
