Just arrived back to Denver from a great trip to So Cal and SD for the Bowl Game....I am a '89 Grad and it was awesome to finally attend a bowl game that my team was actually in.
Me and a buddy flew out to Orange County and spent a few days up in LB before heading down to SD and the game...Late Wednesday night (while sitting out in the hot tub with no rain) we got reports that the game may be off and the stadium was flooded...so when we woke up Thursday to blue skies in LB and reports on ESPN that the game was on, we headed down the 5 at 11 am...traffic was heavy but kept moving and we arrived in SD at 1:15
We stopped at the Walmart in C-Mesa and grabbed Aztec gear then off to La Zarape in Univ Heights for tacos and beers...KOGO 600 had a great pregame and kept repeating that the game was on and the field was in great shape..
We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot in the Gaslamp and checked in at 3:15, dropped the luggage and car then walked over to the train transit center with just a few Aztec and Navy fans boarding.
The worry came in Old Town but we jumped right on a green train that quickly filled and watched as other fans at subsequent stops were unable to board (we tried to get riders to keep moving to the center of the trains to allow more fans on but they just did not get it ). The train had an incredible view of the SD river and mission valley/flooding.
Once at the parking lot (4:25 pm )the excitement was electric....fans everywhere tailgating and the weather was perfect. We headed over to F2 to soak in some atmosphere and drink our beers before getting tickets. We quickly found a fan/not a scalper selling some good plaza level tickets in sec 34 for $40.00 so we grabbed them and made it in just in time for the anthem...
Stadium looked great and when the Aztecs took the field the crowd was in full force. Seemed to be very few Navy fans around.
We met alot of really great fans both Navy and SDSU and stayed to the finish..the win/performance of the team was pretty dominating.
After the game once we saw the line we just walked over to the stop near McGregors (Mission Valley Center?) There was a train waiting and we jumped right on..back to hotel in the Gaslamp by 9:02. Showered and went to dinner and beers to celebrate.
The next day we ran into a few Aztec fans downtown and we all celebrated with high fives. Thought the Gaslamp and ballpark area looked great (downtown has changed so much since I went to school in SD between 85-89).
Went back up to OC through Temecula and went wine tasting (wanted to avoid I-5) Great weather and some pretty nice wineries made for a cool stop.
Stayed at the Hyatt in Newport last night and enjoyed Balboa Island and the lights, then a long run today along the coastline then back to Denver by 6 pm tonight....ahhh the holidays and a SDSU Bowl game victory ..it was all I wanted for Christmas!! Merry Christmas all!
PS: we ran into a player and is family in John Wayne airport and told them how proud of them we were and how great it was to come out and support them)
