I've seen some great Aztec wins. By a thin 17-8 margin over Oregon State in the early 70s. Decisively over Florida State in the late 70s. Over Cal in the early 90s. But last night trumps them all. The electricty, the improbable weather, the crowd enthusiasm, the swagger or OUR football team was something I will treausre forever. For those of us who have seen the very bad and ugly, this season will be something to take down the road. And, it all happened so suddenly. Is there Aztec football in heaven? Lord, I hope so. Merry Christmas to all you long time and even new Aztec fans. Fight On!

the beatdown of Oklahoma in mid-90's was a doozy.

Any win where you are given a trophy and there are speeches after the game is a pretty special win.

I would have to cast my vote for the '86 victory over BYU. It was our first ever and sealed the conference title and a trip to the Holiday Bowl. Attendance was around 60k. Unbelievable night!!

It was very special, I will give you that.
Like so many others on this board, I attended the holiday bowl, the Freedom bowl, the Las Vegas bowl and did not see a bowl win until last night.
But, like us, Navy was not even ranked. Lets put it in perspective. I expected us to win and we did.

The Florida State game had a bigger feel to it, at the time (and yes, as it turned out, that was our bowl game that year). The weather was better and the atmosphere was electrical. Still, I would put this in as our second best game. The Camellia Bowl victories were good, but not near the crowd or excitement. I didn't make it to the Pasadena Bowl. The '86 Holiday Bowl was exciting, but was a let down in the end. I wasn't able to attend the Freedom Bowl. And the only phrase I can think of for the Las Vegas Bowl (and this is no reflection on the team or their effort) is that 'It blew!"
Why do we do so well in games named after flowers?

For me it is the Florida State game. We beat a solid team in Navy. With Florida State, we embarrassed a highly ranked team, and I don't think anyone saw it coming except the Aztec faithful.

I have seen better Aztec Teams win games over better opponents, but this is the most meaningful.

1966 win over North Dakota State 36-0 at Balboa Stadium. That vaulted us and Don Coryell into the known world. North Dakota State came in ranked #1 small college team and after the game we were #1 and went on to win the title.

This game is the best win for the current generation of young Aztecs, though. When I look back at my post, and some of the others, a number of us have been willing carriers of the Aztec Banner for decades. Though I hope the younger Aztecs, and life itself, will allow us to continue carrying those banners, I am quite hopeful that many more young Aztecs will join the fray, and that these events (winning bowl games and championship basketball) are much more common for years to come.

I was a freshman at the Florida State game... enjoyed it but did not appreciate it (thought we would have many years of great victories after that game)... After years (decades) of sad SDSU games and losses, this game (and this whole week in fact as I came down with my family for the Top 10 Basketball Aztecs beatdown of UCSB in front of a full house) have been the Greatest Ever! Go Aztecs!

#5 - San Diego "Stinkin" State Beats Cal. #4 - A TIE - SDSU Clobbers Oklahoma (highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tycEkAE6IbE) and the win over Wyoming the same year when WYO had the nation's longest winning streak. Blanton was one of my favorite State QB's...(Later, of course, it all went to hell at UNLV, but that's a topic for another thread) #3 - Fla St win. That one showed the program was going big time under Gilbert (of course, things didn't work out so well after, but that game was a real high water mark) #2 - Poinsettia Bowl. The rebirth - a start of something very good. #1 - The 86 win over the BYU's. After getting the crap kicked out of us year after year by the likes of Bosco, Young, Wilson and that miserable Ty Detmer, we beat them and won the WAC Championshp. My Gawd, did that win ever feel good.

We lost but that was a great Saturday afternoon game & was like our bowl game since we weren't going to a bowl game that year. Fun day @ the Murph!

The highest ranked team we ever beat was Iowa State (ranked #12) and yet it is rarely mentioned.

North Dakota State came in ranked #1 small college team and after the game we were #1 and went on to win the title. Agree. The feeling was way beyond electric. My second choice would be the Fog Bowl win over Fresno. But, those wins were eons ago and are now distant memories. The Poinsettia Bowl has it's own special meaning to each of us. For me it was removing a giant monkey from my back. Cleansing my spirit. Renewing my hope. Tasting victory once again after so many years of pain and frustration. Making Aztec football meaningful again. There is just so much to feel when the Phoenix rises from the ashes. This win was both different and wonderful. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.
