I can't speak about much prior to Fish coming to town, but the first half o tonight's game was the best half of basketball I have witnessed PERIOD ... Coach doesn't get a lot of credit for his coaching ability, but tonight he was amazing. On offense, it was obvious State had been coached to beat the match up zone. Yes, we hit shots, but how many dunks and open threes were there? We made the extra pass when needed and completely destroyed their zone! ... On defense coach dialed up the full court press and it took UCSB out of their offensive game. A team literally could go through an entire season without having a 5 second call, our defense forced 3(2?) tonight. Great pressure extended to half court.
Thus, my game ball goes to Coach Steve Fisher! Two cheers for coach, "hip hip ..."

It was a truly outstanding half. Well coached, well executed and the shots were falling. 9 for 9 from the line with Malcolm shooting FT's like he was Calvin Murphy.

Yup, that was THE best half of basketball I've ever witnessed. It doesn't get any better than that. But I didn't like all the easy baskets UCSB was gettting. Take away those easy baskets and we win by 40.

Yes. Coach Fisher said the same thing, too.

I went to the Oklahoma State game 7 or 8 years ago and that was an amazing performance. Was not there tonight but I would at least throw out there that game as one to measure up against.

I can't remember a better one. We watched the best Aztec team ever play their best half of basketball so far this season. We shot 69% for the half with 62% from long-distance and 9-9 from the line. We shot holes in the match-up zone defense.

I was also saying that at halftime. I have never experienced a better half of basketball in my entire lifetime. It was complete perfection, and it was against a very strong team. That was fun!

I agree, this game and the Ok. State were tops....Was it Al Faux hitting all those 3's? ?

An easy way to measure an offensive performance is:
TO + Opponents Defensive rebounds + Missed Free Throws.
Because those are the ways a team doesn't score. The Aztecs had 4 turnovers. UCSB had 3 defensive rebounds. The Aztecs did not miss a free throw. So the total for the first half is 7. I would bet the Aztecs have never done that before.

I just remember good Oklahoma State team had no answers and were destroyed by us and it was not close. We only scored 48 points in that half. We missed free throws, turned the ball over, and didn't get offensive rebounds. It was not as impressive as tonights first half. It may have been more fun because it was more unexpected. Look at the attendance for that game vs the Cowboys...not even 6k. Total domination in the first half tonight, where the OSU game we were playing out of our heads. Those were fun times though back in the day with Randy Holcomb and Al Faux. Look at where Fish has brought us from since those days.
We are a darn good team.

That was a great game. How about this game, same year. We opened the game on an 18-0 run, and we were up 30-7 10 minutes in.

Guess who the coaches of the game were. That's correct. Yours truly and Greg Newbold. Of course we graciously shared the credit with Coach Fisher. Hang in there, Matt

The first half last night was right up there with the 2nd half of the Oklahoma State game. OSU was a much better team than UCSB, and we were down 7 at the half. 48-20 in the 2nd half. This was OSU pre-plane crash that year, so there were no outside distractions.

Right up there with the Oklahoma State half and the BYU half a few years ago.
