SDSU has been known as "Running Back University" for years - starting with Marshal Faulk becoming a Heisman candidate and NFL Hall of Famer. Of course we also had Pumphrey set the NCAA rushing record while sending others to the NFL, such as Ronnie Hillman and Rashaad Penny.
This feels like the worst rushing team we have had in 20+ years. I decided to look back the last 10 seasons and compare average yard per game and average yards per carry. 2019 was the only season with less YPC, but we miraculously ended up 10-3 with wins over UCLA, Fresno State and our favorite team to beat, BYU. Ryan Agnew was the QB and he had a lot of carries with only 1.6 YPC.
I know many of you thought Rocky Long football was boring, but I would take him back in a heartbeat right now! FYI, Rocky is currently a defensive analyst at Fort Lewis College (he must be semi-retired).
Season: YPG, YPC (Primary RBs) 2024: 125.8, 3.6 (Cooper) 2023: 154.3, 4.1 (QB Mayden, Armstead, Christon) 2022: 143.4, 4.0 (Byrd, Armstead, Christon) 2021: 174.3, 4.3 (Bell, Bell, Williams, Byrd, QB Johnson & QB Brookshire) 2020: 199.4, 4.5 (Bell, Bell, Williams, Byrd) 2019: 140.5, 3.4 (Washington, Bell, Jasmin, Byrd, QB Agnew) 2018: 161.7, 4.1 (Washington, Jasmin) 2017: 252.5, 5.7 (Penny & Washington) 2016: 262.9, 5.8 (Pumphrey & Penny) 2015: 233.3, 4.8 (Pumphrey, Penny & Price)

Cooper seems to me to be a step too slow. Whoever was running it for UNM had some jets on his feet on those two runs last night. That and a defense that seemed clueless about how to stop him until the 2nd half.

When is Christon supposed to be back? Not that he has a chance for any touches as long as Lewis has his (very mediocre) golden boy healthy.

Copper is the lowest of the top 40 running backs with yards per carry and third with the most attempts. His past greatness was with the little boys, he's now playing with the middle boys and is not doing so hot.

Offensive lines make a difference. I think Cooper is pretty good. It would be interesting to see him running behind the Pumphrey and Penny lines. And having a good blocking fullback makes a difference as well.

I'm looking for his fumbles on a couple of different sites but can't seem to find it. Has Cooper fumbled yet for us? I dont remember top of my head. I'm willing to bet that is why he has received 99% of the carries. The lack of fumbles plus pass protect is my guess why he gets at the PT. I would still like a 80/20% for carries for RB's but what do I know.

I do think fumbled once? Maybe twice? He is durable and doesn't fumble. Not sure anyone has a problem with him personally. Just his situational and frequency use.

Another thing to ask is what is happening at practice, are the other RB's just screwing up that bad that Coach Lewis has no faith in them to play them in the games?

Fumbles will get you on the bench. Thanks for finding Den60!

With as many carries as he has had in his career you'd expect that at least once a helmet would have hit the ball just right and force it out.

Well, maybe the O-line can get a block in, or at least get in the way, before the rusher gets to Cooper?
