Byrd is the Word: Miles Byrd in his first ever start at the collegiate level helps lead San Diego State to power past UCSD in season opening win, 63-58. SDSU's Killer B's look like they have the makings of a very clutch backcourt. Our analysis of UCSD was spot on. It took some time for both teams to get the lid off the basket, but both teams will improve as the year goes on. Ultimately it was the defense as always that took over the game for the Aztecs. sonsofmontezuma.com/2024/11/07/byrd-is-the-word-san-diego-state-powers-past-ucsd-in-season-opening-win-63-58/

Ya, he relished it as well. Need big years from Boyd, Byrd, and waters. If the front court can be serviceable, guard play can take you deep into tournaments.

I think we can get great years from Boyd, Byrd, and Waters, plus BJ and Wayne provide depth. Jones needs to be more than solid at the frontline. Gwath has potential, but I’m not sold on him this year. Heide looked bad last night. I think Compton ends up being our first big off the bench.

What a nice stat line
20pts 8 rebs 3 ast 5 steals 4 blocks
7-12 FG's 4-8 from 3pt 2-2 Ft
And most importantly only 1 turnover

That's how absurd those numbers are. Even more absurd in a 63-58 game that didn't have 1000 possessions per side.

That one block on a fast break after he lost the ball was my favorite play
Dude might be the next Aztec All-American if he fills out a stat sheet like that on the regular

Compton is legit and will be an Aztec great if we are able to keep him. He has great instincts and looks like he belongs. I never felt he looked overmatched or lost on the court. Dude is gonna be special and I just hope we can keep him.
Byrd and Compton really stood out to me. BJ looks good and Boyd showed flashes.
Our bigs played horrible and they are going to get eaten alive by the Zags if we don't show some serious improvement. The big transfer from MTSU is soft and makes bad decisions. I am hoping it was first game jitters. Gwath is a totem pole and kept getting hurt. Heide is still a big question mark to me. We might be in trouble down low this year. I was really expecting more from our bigs. Our guard play will be yuge for us!

Boyd and Byrd hitting clutch shots, 3s. Most importantly we finally have a real true point guard in Boyd, they put the ball in his hands and let him create. No weave offense needed. He broke the defense down and made some great passes, buckets. It was a true joy to know we have a PG who has Mahomes like intangibles. We’re in good hands with Boyd, not sure how the blinded power 5 blue bloods with deep deep pockets let this guy get away to SDSU. Byrd continued his great play we saw last year and the Swish league this summer, nice to see him put it all together as a starter at Viejas. Unfortunately Heidi looked slow, trying to guard smaller quicker guys on the wing, having them blow by. Maybe match up I hope but a continuation of last year, hoping for better days ahead for him, but not holding my breath.

With how silky smooth Waters' game is, I can't wait to see him team up with Byrd with Boyd running the point.
A sequel to Franklin, Tapley & Xavier

People seem to forget how much ledee struggled at first, he only started hitting his stride late in his first year with us. It’ll take some time and that is fine

I think JCJ will get close to 10-7 every game and that Pharaoh will come close to that by mid-season. We'll be fine there but probably not before December.

He might be erratic at times, but Miles Byrd is a freak athlete with great instincts too.

Last year watching Byrd was like watching a puppy. Full of energy but at times tripping over himself. I think he will be outstanding this year and continually get better and better. If he stays healthy he will end up in The NBA.

I am looking forward to seeing Byrd and the rest of the team this season.
Like every year: Strong wins versus out of conference power teams; win the regular season and postseason Mountain West tournaments and be in the NCAA tournament. I have one additional item: A better 3 point shooting accuracy as a team. No more finishing #296 like last season. Top 50 would do.
