Paul can you shed some light on non-football, basketball partners? What pick Long Beach St., UC Riverside and UC San Diego over the best teams in the Big West: UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and now UC Davis (who have all made the NCAA tournament & traditionally have a high NET, RPI and Kenpom ranking? I don't get the logic? "Gonzaga would be an ideal non-football addition. For all the hand-wringing about the Mountain West’s new 20-game schedule, it was interesting that Wicker said an 18-game conference schedule would be his choice for basketball. Aside from the Zags, other schools that should interest the Pac-12 as basketball-only additions include Long Beach State, UC Riverside, and UC San Diego. The latter schools already have athletic budgets around $25 million. According to USA Today, this amount is at the level spent by lower-budgeted FBS schools." Athletic budgets, educational rankings, and geography are part of the equation. The other consideration is what happens if Gonzaga says "no." Lets say they are are nine football schools and need one more for basketball like Wicker suggested. Would a full share of the TV revenue for say Wyoming be better than a partial share for UCSD? We are leaving schools like Wyoming behind for a reason. UNLV is the last remaining MWC i think is worthy of including. If Gonzaga doesn't want to join, that is fine. I want them as I think it brings status to the conference in BB. Yeah, BB doesn't drive the bus but it still gets eyeballs. It just isn't perfect for advertising as football and baseball are when takes at least 3 hours to play with little actual action. If getting Memphis, Tulane and UTSA means leaving UNLV behind then it is what it is. But, I think it would be those three plus UNLV to get to 10 and the PAC headquarters would be in Las Vegas.

My hope….. Florida St and Clemson leave the ACC for Big 10 or 12 Cal, Stanford and SMU leave ACC to Pac 12 Memphis and UNLV into Pac 12 Gonzaga and St. Mary’s to Pac 12 (no football) I have little doubt that Stanford and Cal will not be returning to the PAC.

Leaving ACC would already be an untenable admission of failure … they would never rejoin a conference with the likes of SDSU and Fresneck. Never.

But if Clemson and Florida State leave for SEC while North Carolina and Virginia leave for the B1G, do Cal and Stanford want to travel that far to be in a conference that lost their 4 highest level programs?

Stanford & CAL have the same Grant of Rights issues as Florida State & Clemson, to get out of the ACC. However, if ESPN unilaterally does not pick up the ACC option for 2027-2036, I assume the nullifies the GOR until 2036, and the ACC will be left to renegotiate the entire deal, unless the league crumbles. ESPN is the key.
