Does anyone know what the status of SDSU’s R1 rating is? I thought we were close last year.

Perhaps a brief reminder or definition as to what R1 is might help? From what little I know/remember is that R1 is ranks research schools? Perhaps? Anyway, to help us all understand better!
Go Aztec's!!

I believe they originally hoped to achieve R1 in 2025. On their website, they list things that have completed to help achieve this status plus things in progress and when they hope that are completed. www.sdsu.edu/strategic-plan/updates

Go Aztec's!! Carnegie research ranking. We are supposed to obtain the top ranking by 2025. Like me, it's kind of a big deal.

How many rankings are there?
Are we at least R2 now?
What about the Coaches poll?

We did $192M in research for 2023. 2024 numbers should be coming out soon as, I believe, they are computed from September to September.

Gaining R1 status seemed really important when we were trying to show the PAC12 elitists how good of a school we are and gain their approval/acceptance. I don't think in this new era of re-alignments, it's as much of an issue as the number of potential eyeballs watching media options.

SDSU brings in roughly 10x $$$ from research funds than it does athletics... the impact of R1 status on athletics is a footnote to its importance to SDSU as an academic institution. It is a VERY big deal.

It is a VERY big deal. I didn't mean to infer it wasn't a big deal and it's certainly something everyone associated with SDSU should feel proud about but in the context of significantly improving our chances for P5 inclusion. I don't think it's nearly as important as it was when we were groveling before the academic elites of the PAC12.

If I recall the elitist Pac schools looked down at OSU/WSU because they weren't AAU, just R1. Screw those bastards I'll take R1 any day. I agree with hoobs, it's a big deal for a CSU.

The 'Innovation District' may help catapult our research donations when it's finally finished. Of course, I may be wearing Depends and drooling onto an adult bib by then.

One of the things about the Innovation District is that it will allow those who develop new technologies to be able to earn from the patents. You want big donors you need tech entrepreneurs and we want big donors.
