That hillside on the north side of Snapdragon Stadium is currently an eyesore, but it could be improved and beautified through SDSU/City/Corporate/Private donations. It would improve the view not only from inside of Snapdragon but for the Mission Valley area as a whole. Television crews would no doubt focus on the area during televised football games and other sporting events. Personally, I'd like to see a large illuminated concrete "SD" Spear logo placed on the hillside (in the tradition of what used to exist on Cowles Mountain***), along with a combination of beautiful palm trees, pine trees, bushes, ice plant, ivy, flowers, etc., in order to give that view a real college feel. They could initially begin with relocating those unsightly electric lines and placing them underground, followed by tearing down those ugly old metal transmission line towers. I realize there were "initial" plans to build a high rise hotel (Hotel California?) on the northwesterly side of the stadium parking lot (which would block out part of the view of that hillside, but I haven't seen updated plans for the hotel lately. Any other thoughts on how that hillside could be landscaped or improved? *** www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GgCIxec08c

Totally agree and great posting on the overall appearance. For years I have wondered and wished that some planting be done to those slopes...my wish was for bouganvillea plants as they thrive in low water, low maintenance and beautiful colors. Including Bright Red!!
Go Aztecs!!!!!!!!!!!

From what I understand they (sdsu) also owns a nice size chuck of property along Friars (base of hillside) just to the East of the Fire station.
They should work with the City to maybe enlarge the Fire station along with putting in a Police Substation along with a Big Parking structure with a overpass/walkway connecting to the hotel and accessing the campus/stadium.
The reason for the combo with the city is to get some tax's breaks and doing a solid for building even stronger relations with the city, this could be a big win/win
This would also free up more space for a larger hotel/conference center by moving most the parking across the street while allowing for more seating on the North end of stadium that could blend into hotel/conference center.
-Just throwing stuff out there to open up discussions
*** Sorry guys, hit the Mt Dew a little early this morning.

Maybe some huge canopies would look nice up there.

Putting a great football team on the field will make everything look better.

I don't think any of that property was included in the SDSU West initiative. It's probably why the city still has that parking lot there, that I believe is used for overnight parking for the homeless.

You won't be able to see the hillside when they build the hotel

You won't be able to see the hillside when they build the hotel I know that the Hotel will be contracted out to a Hotel chain to construct, but does anyone know if we have made any progress in finding that tenant? The hotel will be used to give hands-on experience for SDSU's Hospitality students.

I've thought the same thing from the opening. I guess where I diverge is I agree with the above that if you plant Bougainvilla, etc for more of a natural look, it'll be a lot easier on the eyes. I was down there the other day scouting tailgate opportunities and was impressed with the amount of wildlife that is already coming back. It'd be a good tie-in project in that sense, BUT... the hotel. If the hotel is going in, then I think eyesore factor goes away and maybe whoever owns the hotel steers the wheel on something like that so their guests aren't looking out on it.
Also... What surprised me was that the big huge dirt lot is still just that. I figured some footing and foundations on at least a couple of the classroom buildings would be poured by now. Anybody know the timing of all that?

I'm assuming that last date range of 2022-2037 for the completion of the residential, office, retail and hotel projects has been narrowed down a bit. Anyone know?

I'm assuming that last date range of 2022-2037 for the completion of the residential, office, retail and hotel projects has been narrowed down a bit. Anyone know? two projects have been approved by the CSU trustees and development will star in 2025. Residential and RetailThe Board of Trustees also approved the terms of a 99-year ground lease with AvalonBay, which will develop the first residential and retail project at SDSU Mission Valley. The project will be a mixed-use building with 621 apartments, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units, as well as 30,000 square feet of leasable ground-floor retail space, including a grocery store. Affordable HousingThe first affordable housing project, to be developed by Chelsea Investment Corporation, is set to be constructed on a parcel in the northeastern portion of the SDSU Mission Valley site. The seven-story building will provide 186 dwelling units, with 184 designated as income-restricted units and two manager units. Should be finished in 2027
