Per UT Zeigler: The San Diego State men’s basketball team went to the Del Mar horse races earlier this week for an NIL event sponsored by the MESA Foundation collective. The track posted photos of players and coaches.
You might have noticed Florida Atlantic transfer Nick Boyd with a mobility scooter and a protective boot on his left foot.
It’s been that way since Boyd badly rolled his ankle last month, forcing him to miss much of the summer session.
The good news: Boyd expects the boot to come off and on-court rehab to begin in the next week or so.
He should be back when official preseason practice begins in late September.
“I think he’s more anxious than I am,” coach Brian Dutcher said. “I want him healthy more than anything. If you’re going to be injured, this is the time to be injured. Take all the time in the world. It’s early September. We don’t play until November. We’ve got two months to get him ready.
“If he was a freshman, it would be way more of a concern, learning all the new stuff. But he’s played college basketball at the highest level. He knows what it is. Yeah, I’d like to have him out here and let him feel more comfortable. But his health is the most important thing going into the season for us.”

That scares me. If you roll an ankle bad enough to have to use a scooter for that long, it's anatomically more likely to be much more susceptible to rolling it again in the future.

I agree. “I sprained it really bad this summer, got some X-rays on it and it looks good. I’m just not rushing it because I have prior history with my ankles.” Boyd broke a bone in his right foot in October 2021 at Florida Atlantic, was targeted for a January return, then opted to sit out the remainder of the season.

Not to mention the mental aspect or fear of re-rolling again. Anyone who has left the ground only to land on someone’s foot knows how badly this hurts.
