Xander birdies #1 and Scheffler bogies which puts Xander tied for 1st place. Only took one hole on the first round to bring Scottie back to the pack.

Today Xander gets a pass for his worst round of the tournament. If he does the same tomorrow, he'll be lucky to end up in 2nd place on Sunday. He started off at -8 today, but he allowed other players to catch up to him as he pretty much stood still. Scheffler has proven to be a great finisher so the $25 million is his to win.

Big hill to climb as Scottie played well today. Xander really struggled off the tee. He also just missed a few birdies. Tomorrow is a big day for Xander and I hope he comes out and has a low score of the day type round. He is going to need it go get back up there with Scottie. He needs a Morikawa type day because that young man was on fire today.

Today was Xander's 29th Round he's ever played at Eastlake. Today was the 29th time he shot at least Par or under. (only 3 times he shot Par, the other 26 were under Par)
He's down 7 shots but he has three more rounds and just needs to eat that elephant one bite at a time.

It looks like they suspended play today, but Xander is playing well - 6 under through 16 holes. Scheffler was 3 under through 15 holes, which means Xander is currently only 4 strokes off the lead (-15 to Scheffler's -19).

End of round:
Scheffler: -21 (-5 today) Morikawa: -17 (-8 today) Xander: -16 (-7 today)
Theegala, Wyndam Clark and Adam Scott tied at -12.
Tomorrow is "moving day."

Xander's in a good spot going off right in front of the leaders. He and Theegala won't have much of a crowd other than Theegala's huge family contingent.
He can come in with another nice unobtrusive 64 and hope Scottie gets some pressure put on him by Morikawa. Would love to see Xander get the lead back down to at least just 2 shots for Sunday.
I think Scheffler has had so many difficult final rounds at Eastlake, if Xander can stay close, he can close him out.

Xander has a better than even chance to come in 2nd tomorrow. There's no way Xander or anyone else will catch Scheffler.

Only thing good about Xander's round is that he kept up his streak of 30 straight rounds at Eastlake at Par or under Par. Pretty amazing in that he's only ever played 30 rounds there too. He had at least 6-7 putts inside 10 feet for birdie that he just missed.
Tomorrow has to be a plain ol' money grab. He's in 4th place, 1 shot ahead of two guys at 5th. He's one shot behind 3rd and five back of Morikowa in 2nd. He's 10(!!!) behind Scottie, who's 5 ahead of Morikowa.
1st: $25,000,000 2nd: $12,500,000 3rd: $7,500,000 4th: $6,000,000 5th: $5,000,000 6th: $3,500,000 7th: $2,750,000 8th: $2,225,000 9th: $2,000,000 10th: $1,750,000 11th: $1,075,000 12th: $1,025,000
Gotta believe he's good for at least a million.

Not a great start today. He's just kinda plodding along. He's losing (lost?) touch with the top 3, so let's see if he and his putter can get hot.
If not, I blame his ugly shirt today!! 😉 😝

When he accused Theegala of touching sand on his backswing in the bunker yesterday, that destroyed his concentration. That cost Theegala 2 strokes. It was a very subtle error on Theegala's part since the sand lump behind his ball wasn't raked properly. I'm sure if it happened again Xander would let it fly. It doesn't help that he partnered with Theegala today.
Remember, the same thing happended to Scheffler in the PGA championship that Xander won. Scheffler was detained by the police so that took him out of his game.

AND he kept his rounds at Eastlake, at Par or under par, at 32 straight out of 32 played.

Everything I have read is that only Theegala THOUGHT it happened and he still self reported the penalty. There has been nothing but praise for him for doing the honorable thing and my view of Theegala has gone way up. Xander had nothing to do with it.

Where did you hear that Xander had anything to do with it? FYI - I am now a Theegala fan as I really enjoyed watching him play and his composure. The self report was just one more appreciation for him as a player.

I wonder if Xander knows that if he provides a 20 mil contribution to SDSU we will make a statue of him ?

One of the announcers said Xander brought it up to an official. Theegals should have reported it the moment he did it. No different than when a ball moves, the player immediately calls an official for a ruling.
