You can't win a tournament in the first round but you can lose one. Xander right in the mix.

Xander shoots a 5-under-par 66 to go -11 for the tournament. Tied for first with Tommy Fleetwood, who plays out of his mind, eagling the third hole, followed by six birdies. Fleetwood comes back to earth a little bit with a bogey at 18 to drop him back into a tie with Xander.
X-man is well positioned for a run at the gold. Again.

Tied with Matsuyama also. Had a head-to-head final round shootout with him at the Tokyo Olympics and he beat him. Fleetwood has had a very hard time closing so I'm not as worried about him.
Rahm is lurking at -9 and just won his first Tournament of the entire year at a LIV event last week in England. He's a bigger worry. The difference now is that I have more faith in Xander putting his foot down hard on the gas pedal than I do these guys catching him. If/when he shoots another round tomorrow at -4 to -6, I think he'd be the favorite in the final round.

It looks like Xander's odds to win it are 17/10 right now and no one else is better than 4-1. So he's already the favorite

Xander tied for 3rd after 10 holes, two shot behind Fleetwood's -13. Rahm's at -12. But Xander's in trouble in a bunker at #11.
Packed leaderboard with McElroy, Scheffler, Day and others right behind. Of the top 9 players, Xander is the only one not under par today. He's at even par.

Xander birdies #12 to tie for 2nd with Fleetwood at -12, 1 behind Rahm.

Finished round 3 at -14, tied for lead with Jon Rahm who shot -5 today.
Tons of studs within 4 strokes behind, tomorrow for the gold will be epic.

What a delicious pairing, Rahm and X should be epic. Xander now arguably the best player in the world. Hoping he does not jump to LIV, where he’d no doubt be given nine figures.
Go X, Aztec for Life.

There's no way he will. Didn't you read a few weeks ago that he and his father listened to LIV's pitch, then walked out? Something about too many restrictions.

Plus now that he's winning majors, he making tons of money. His endorsements will continue to grow as well. There's no reason for him to go anywhere given he's at the top of the golf world. It's working REALLY well for X, he won't want or need to go LIV. While I didn't care for LIV initially, I don't really care anymore. I think in some ways the younger guys who went that are still studs - Rahm , Koepka, Bryson - probably erred in going as they don't seem to be playing as well ... except Dechambeau. The other guys like DJ, Poulter, etc seem to be past their prime and got $$$ offers they probably couldn't refuse.

Rahm will be motivated to do something positive this year. X was a bit off today, missed a couple of easy putts early, so remaining tied in the league while not playing his best ought to be a confidence booster. There have been some really low scores on the course so a lot of players are still in it.

I think Rahm is regretting his decision. Saw a video of him complaining about drones during his swing. Yeah, he got $550 M from LIV but I am sure LIV has protections for themselves if one should leave before their contract ends, so they pretty much own him. But, it wasn't like Rahm was poor before LIV came calling.

After he won the Masters when he beat the LIV player, he said he's a solid PGA guy for sure. Now look where we are. I hope Xander whips his ass tomorrow. We'll see if Rahm can remake his adjustment from the LIV format to the 72 hole format.

Adding a second gold medal to his two majors would be an incredible year.
If he doesn't get another gold, winning the FedEx Cup this year (with its' $25 Million payday) would also be a spectacular year.
(No matter what he does the rest of the year, winning two majors in the same year is very rare.)

What a difference a couple Majors make. The NBC promo for tomorrow's final round wasn't accompanied by a picture of Rahm or Rory or Scottie. It was one of Xander.
His Q score has gotten huge.
