Per Yahoo & On3.com -- The Power conference commissioners finalized new roster-size limits that pave the way for athletic departments to distribute millions of dollars in new scholarships to athletes in, most notably, football, baseball and softball.
As part of the new revenue-sharing model — beginning in 2025-26 academic year — by-sport scholarship restrictions are eliminated, and schools are permitted to offer scholarships to the entirety of their rosters. The new roster limit figures are not final until the approval of House settlement terms.
*Football 105 (+20) *Basketball 15 (+2) *Baseball 34 (+22.3) *Softball 25 (+13) *Volleyball 18 (+6)

Then again with NIL what is really that different from a scholarship and a Walk-on these days? There are less restriction on a walk-on and money makes up for about everything else. Look at the changes just in the last few years with NIL and the Transfer Portal, this is not even the same game anymore. College Student Athlete is a thing of the past!

This ruling will be another nail in the coffin of G5's or Mid-Majors, as they are the schools that will lose 2 more basketball players & 20 more football at a much higher rate. Bundle this ruling with NIL payments, open portals, ease on transfers, plus social media and media collectives, and everything works against non-power 4 schools.
Based on 70 schools give or take, that's 1,400 football player difference, and basketball 80+ schools equates to 160 additional players finding homes. Do the power conferences really need that level of depth? At the end who really benefits?
Per Unigo.com (https://www.unigo.com/scholarships/athletic/football-scholarships) the average FBS scholarship was $24K in 2020. And with 105 players Power schools spend a minimum of $2.5MM+ on scholarships alone.
NCAA Division 1
NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is the highest level of college football and is governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. D1 has 130 teams and 15,831 players. With larger budgets, these programs have 85 scholarships to hand out. All are full rides with an average amount of $24,058 in 2020. Every Year a coach may provide up to 25 new scholarships. Academic scholarships and need based aid may also be available.

I don't see how this will radically change things. For example, football is restricted to 22 players on the field as is 5 for basketball on the court. The excess amount of bench players will use the transfer portal. Players want to play, not get paid for just sitting on the bench.

But they'll initially get a lot of smoke blown up their a$$ about how important they are to Ohio State or Clemson or even Iowa State. They'll get some NIL $ and then about 40 of them will sit on the bench until the next year when they bring in a whole bunch of other studs. THEN maybe they'll go into the portal. But the Ohio State retreads will go to BYU or Vanderbilt or Boston College and just maybe a couple will find their way to the G5 market.

as always it benefits the Power conferences the most - start adding up the additional costs with the extra players - stretches out the budget even more for G5 schools
more players will transfer out of their schools and for the most part from 1 Power school to another Power School
As Dutcher has said it is very difficult to keep 11 players happy - how will it be when you have more
the only rule that may have benefitted G5 schools was the extra year players got for Covid season - SDSU basketball had quite a few guys that used the extra year when SDSU went to MM Champs game
Going to make it very difficult for coaches to balance out PT for players and the merry go round will only get worse

A Stanford softball pitcher just got a million dollar NIL deal. To go to Texas Tech I think.

Perhaps I am just dense, but what prevents the G5 schools from increasing the size of their rosters? Yes, the cost factor is an issue with the G5s, but is there some ruling that prevents the G5s from doing the same thing?

With this new rule kicking in next year, Can schools still issue 80 - 95 scholarships and still have walk on players?

AzWm It won't matter if the G5 schools do that. It matters that 75 or so P5 schools will add 20 players to their rosters. That's 1500 more good athletes that are now not available for G5 programs. If the G5 schools also do that, it just means you're adding more kids from the bottom of the barrel.

With this new rule kicking in next year, Can schools still issue 80 - 95 scholarships and still have walk on players? Football's current roster limit is 120, so there will be 15 less players on every squad. And do not fool yourself, the larger schools have been using NIL, academic scholarships, and work programs to have the best 120 they could acquire. This is very uneventful, and dare say positive. For basketball, the roster limit remains the same, but can offer two more scholarships. You aren't going to find many kids wanting to be #15. The other sports will be interesting, as the roster limit remains the same but they can offer full scholarships. This new arrangement is better for State, IMO.
