Per Zeigler in the July 12 UT
New era for SDSU MBB - Last week SS practices began
6 members have never worn an Aztec jersey in a MW game
Per Dutcher - coaches have to be prepared to flip rosters with the newer NIL and Transfer rules
This team will very likely be taller and Younger then the previous year - the Potential starting backcourt trio could be 6'3" - 6'6" and 6'7" - 9 of the scholarship players are 6'6" or taller
Last year true freshman Heidi and Bryd played some back up minutes - this year M. Gwath - - Taj and P. Compton could be in the rotation and 1 could be a starter - most likely 1 at the 4 position
Dutcher feels his freshmen could earn valuable minutes was ready to add the transfer from Rutgers but he decided to go to BYU - so as of now - he who have been working hard this summer - then simply add a 13 th player
A possible starting group Boyd at PG - Waters and Bryd at the wings - Gwath/ Compton at the 4 and JCP or Heide at the 5 - 2 true freshmen and BJ Davis and transfer Mckinney will likely come off the bench as well
Last year's group led by example but not as vocal as this year's group - Boyd as expected has shown both talent and vocal leadership - as have Bryd and McKinney - this year there will be more verbal leadership and the team knows it will take good team chemistry
Per Bryd the team is young and hungry - the team will break the huddle with " 1, 2 , 3 ... dawgs "
There is going to be a lot of learning and growing pains - especially with the quality OOC
So there is going to be a steep learning curve so the coaches will need to be working even harder then in the past to get them up to the level the team needes to be at . How soon will it take players to play well together but there is the Potential . The individual pieces could be there but to get all the guys on the same page could be a time will tell . but the pieces are there
By the way Shay Johnson has cut his hair but added a beard and not much mention about the the true 7 ft freshmen or the transfer from Brown .
Nevada Sports pick has the Aztecs as a 7th place team in the MW -

In a follow up article with Zeigler
Dutcher has let the guys free lance on offense during practices - the staff will then evaluate what they think might be the best offense to use for the team

Dutcher as expected with all the newer players . combinations and allowing the guys to do their own thing - the offense has been a little ragged - and the proverbial Dutcher likes his guys/ team

No way will this team finish 7th. Cautiously optimistic and excited to see the freshmen (including redshirt).

No way will this team finish 7th. Cautiously optimistic and excited to see the freshmen (including redshirt). I concur on the quality and track record of the coaching staff. But if I look at the turn over and returnees, I can see why others might predict such. USU last year had 100% turn over of players that had appeared in a game. I suspect they were picked at least as poor as our 7th (I do not remember). Note they won the regular season. I realize how rare that is, but it does show what is possible. Go Aztecs.

Last year's table top 7 all 20 game winners. But, I don't think the league is that competitive this season, 7th make's no sense to me. Keep an eye on UNLV this year. Utah St 14-4, 28-7 Nevada 13-5, 26-8 Boise St 13-5, 22-11 UNLV 12-6, 21-13 SDSU 11-7, 26-11 New Mexico 10-8, 26-10Colorado St 10-8, 25-11Wyoming 8-10, 15-17 Fresno St 4-14, 12-21 Air Force 2-16, 9-22 San Jose St 1-17, 9-23

I think Boise and UNLV will be up there and maybe Nevada and New Mexico. Col State has a lot of small-college transfers and a really good player in Nique Clifford coming back. Don't see any of those 5 being way ahead of us.

I've often wondered a bit about Heide. Can he shoot? Any opinions?

I saw him shooting 3-pointers on an Aztec instagram post in practice. But his general shooting history is not a great one: 0-3 from 3, and a pathetic 7-19 FTs (36.8%). However he was 31-46 inside the 3-point line which is a very healthy 67.4%. He had more offensive rebounds than defensive ones so he's pretty good on put-backs.
But I don't remember him actually shooting from outside the 4-ft restricted arc under the basket.

From what I've read Dutch was after hm for a year before he signed with us. So I doubt he'd put that much effort into signing a one dimensional player.

His parents were both D1 Centers at Oregon State so I think he probably has the innate talent. Dutcher thought enough of him to give a true Freshman 8 minutes a game. I think he'll take a step forward with rebounding for sure and maybe scoring.

the staff brought in a transfer JCP that is supposed to have some outside range
Would be more then pleased if Heide can score from down low , get rebounds and be able to defend - SDSU needs a solid 5
