2015 UT Article on Johnson committing the first time. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2015/11/05/is-johnson-qb-to-lead-sdsu-into-spread/“I’ve dreamed of playing for San Diego State since I was a little kid,” Johnson said. “My parents took me to games before I can remember. It was San Diego State on Saturday night and the Chargers on Sunday.” “I’ve been here my whole life. I want to go (to SDSU) and continue the success of the program. I want to be the guy who came right from the backyard. I can’t wait to be there.” I believe that Simmons believes what he says now the same way Jonson believed it way back then. But a whole lot can change in a year with a 17-18 year-old athlete. 1) A whole lot more $ is offered to them than they ever expected 2) They break up with their girlfriend or want to break up or get dumped. 3) SDSU recruits a similar player 4) They see a movie or read a book or see on TV some place or area of the country that looks intriguing or exciting to them. 5) They argue with their parents and want to get away from them. ETC. ETC. ETC. It happens. Hope Simmons still feels the same when it's time to sign. Let's be positive right now, he has one more season of HS ball. We understand things change in today's world. He’s going to blow up his senior season and programs are going to try to swoop in.

Unless we’re talking about high 4 or 5 star guys, I’m not too concerned. The huge money is being handed to players that are EXPERIENCED, transferring and immediately eligible. Am I forgetting about a recent freshman that never showed up due to NIL? The last FR that decommitted was KorenxJohnson and it wasn’t about NIL. Way more concerned about keeping whoever blows up for us THIS season staying an Aztec next season. Thats where the big money offers will come from.

Thats where the big money offers will come from. This. There are actually fewer slots for recruits in top programs then pre-NIL for 2 reasons: 1) The aforementioned transfers take slots away from recruits who are forced into lower tier programs 2) As college athletes get paid there is less incentive to leave early for foreign leagues because they can earn money in college. Longer average tenure in college means fewer slots for recruits. While we will lose some great players to wealthier programs, on balance we will do just fine because we get access to young talent we haven't always been able to. There is a reason the NIL years have been the best in the history of the program.

This kid's got a lot of talent. If he develops a jump shot he's going to be pretty good. Great pickup for us.

with the NIL money and ability to transfer as they want - recruiting has changed dramatically for the coaches
would guess that Dutcher and the staff are well aware of the situation SDSU is at
So if they are pleased with the signing would hope that fans will be also
definitely a balancing act for the staff and they especially take players that want to be at SDSU

The Aztecs will host several prospects over the next few weeks, starting with previous commit Tae Simmons from Simi Valley.

Well.....unless your dad went there and your middle initial is "Dubya". Not just Yale, there are intellectually mediocre legacies all over the Ivy League. You can throw in Georgetown and all the boutique smaller NE institutions like Amherst, Williams, Middlbury etc. It doesn't mean that there aren't a whole lot of smart kids in those schools but having attended one doesn't automatically qualify you as "smart". True. If they're rich and they're a legacy, I assume they got C's in HS. 😂 If they come from any other socioeconomic status that's when I assume intelligence

Suddenly, not quite as worried after reading Zeigler's UT article. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/07/05/sdsu-basketball-lands-first-recruit-for-2025-recruiting-class/Love these quotes from him and his family. His thinking: “I’m not waiting for a better offer than this. I’m not waiting for anything else. This is an amazing program. The coaches really, really want me. Even if somewhere like UCLA offered me, I was so set on San Diego State. That’s how much I want to go there.” Added Lavar: “We have a philosophy in our family: If you know what you want, you go for what you want. We don’t believe in wasting people’s time. He believed it was a great fit for him. We had all our questions and concerns answered. We were on the same page. “For us, it was why drag it on? We don’t want to play games. They really want you, you really want to go to this school, it’s mutual. What’s the benefit of waiting?” Although Simmons is not a hometown guy, his quotes remind me of QB Lucas Johnson when he committed to SDSU the first time around. I dont disagree with you, but also believe the opposite can be true, that he sees the Aztecs growth and potential, and aspires to be part of the Aztec family under Dutch, Dave V, Jaydee, Mild Matt, Coach Fish/Little Fish, Ryan Badrtalei and AG. And interms of NBA Dreams, look at KJ, Jaden, Nathan, Mal, Malcolm, Jalen McD, JJ, and even Jordie and Zylan still playing between G-League and Summer Leagues. Aztecs are progressing into the pros and International ball.
