Official announcement from USU University Affairs July 2, 2024.
Utah State University officials informed Head Football Coach Blake Anderson on Tuesday of their intent to terminate his employment agreement for actions taken in spring 2023. These actions violated both his employment agreement and university policy. Under his employment agreement Coach Anderson will have 14 days to respond.
This decision comes after a thorough external review of alleged noncompliance with university policies that implement Title IX, which require full and timely reporting of disclosures of sexual misconduct — including domestic violence — and prohibit employees from investigating disclosures of sexual misconduct themselves.
Associate Vice President & Deputy Athletic Director of External Affairs Jerry Bovee (Interim Athletic Director, 2023) and Utah State Football Director of Player Development & Community Austin Albrecht have also been dismissed for violations of university policies related to the reporting of sexual and domestic violence and failures of professional responsibilities.
Consistent with Utah’s public records laws and USU policies, the university is not able to release any additional information until all opportunities to respond and/or appeal have expired, which is a minimum of 14 days.
This morning, USU Vice President & Director of Athletics Diana Sabau met with the student athletes and staff of the football program to inform them of these changes and to share that Defensive Coordinator & Defensive Ends Coach Nate Dreiling will serve as USU’s interim head football coach for the 2024 season.
In an email to faculty and staff this morning, President Cantwell and Sabau shared the importance of taking these actions:
“As leaders, we are responsible for ensuring allegations of USU policy violations are investigated. Today’s actions are the result of a thorough external investigation, and we believe the evidence demands immediate action. Our job is to fearlessly hold ourselves and others accountable for their conduct and to make sure that, for the sake of our students and our community, we are living the values of our university. While recognizing the impact of these decisions on our student athletes and football program, we will continue to take the steps necessary to deliver a respectful, transparent and winning culture at Utah State University.”

Bad news all around, except for the fact that he is a hell of a coach and recruiter so literally his departure will no doubt benefit the Aztecs.

When you think about this, it makes me wonder if Hoke's early retirement was his decision. Water over the bridge so we'll never know.

Nate Dreiling is a really great guy. He was NMSU's DC under Jerry Kill. His wife is a cancer patient and the Las Cruces community was awesome about supporting the two of them. It will be interesting to see if he actually remains the HC into the season or if he's just a placeholder until USU finishes their investigation and decides how to move forward. At 33 he's young to be a head coach, but tremendous opportunity for him if it works out.

would guess that USU has him at the very least to keep continuity for them - keep players from leaving and then see how things do for them this season

If you are talking about the Arazia Halloween party issue, Hoke did nothing wrong. He was asked to step down because of the product on the field, not because of a "scandal."

I suspect that Hoke was feeling old and tired and didn't want to deal with all the new stuff like NIL and the transfer portal.

I suspect that Hoke was feeling old and tired and didn't want to deal with all the new stuff like NIL and the transfer portal. Neither Hoke or Rocky were very good with the press, Lewis run circles around them in that regard. But, Hoke was told by the SDPD not to do an investigation while their was still active. That is what he did. As for the new changes, a lot of coaches don't want to deal with them and Nick Saban retired from the best job in CFB in part because of those changes.

Still not sold on the belief that making millionaires out of college kids really improves their real quality of life. I know it does give them a lot of $$$$$$$. but it has totally screwed up college sports . I am nearing 70 and though not rich I am fortunate to be financilly comfortable . The older I get the clearer it becomes that money isn't the most important thing and if I think back to my late teens / twenties I don't think having millions would have been a good thing.
It is true that in a lot of cases many high profile athletes deserve more than a college education, room and board but I wonder if there was a middle ground somewhere ? Anyway that ship has sailed I guess and maybe along with it amateur sports when it comes to D1 football and basketball.

The fact they can transfer multiple times means many will not get their degrees. The average NFL career is 3.3 years while the NBA is 4.5 years, though there are overseas options to extend one's basketball career. Not so much for football players. I also think the football players will now seek to be able to leave for the pros sooner.
