We also heard about Conference USAA being a possibility. I never considered conference names being sold out to corporate naming rights, but hey, if it puts more money into all of the schools' pockets, why not?

Saw on ESPN that MWC also testing the waters? Not sure who would pay what for a piece of the MWC?

The MW should steer clear of PE. I know a lot of PE guys. They are just like me, financial engineers, not operators. All they are going to do is come in and try to market the conference better than what is already the case via sponsorships, etc. They aren't needed. What's needed is a commissioner who is more of an entertainment CEO and businessperson than your typical conference commissioner. Yes, Kliavkoff had that background but I think he was hamstrung by a bunch of university presidents who didn't want to push the envelope.
Bring in a new commissioner who has a true business background getting things done and incentive them with a cut of the incremental revenue the conference generates from new revenue streams and you will get your PE results without near the dilution or the headaches attached with PE.

If you want to keep the pie the same size, you hire attorneys to run the conference. And that is the background of almost every college commissioner. A conference like the MW need to operate like the ABA and AFL, which was run by marketers with the help of attorneys not the other way around. |
