I was surprised to see a college football preview magazine on the shelf at my grocery store….so soon.
Athlon 2024 MWC predictions:
#1. Boise St #2. UNLV #3. Fresneck St #4. Air Force
#8. SDSU
NO AZTEC PLAYERS WERE LISTED as first team preseason players. That may be the first time I have ever seen that. There is always someone, usually a DB or offensive lineman, who is recognized preseason as all conference.
FWIW, The Aztecs recruiting class is ranked second behind Boise State..

Why does this surprise you ?
After going 4-8 with a complete house cleaning, most of our top talent transferring out after Spring Practice, and more players likely will at the conclusion of fall camp, Athlon, like the rest of us have no clue if there is any G5 level talent.
And, they are most likely correct.

No matter how realistic I try to be, my fandom eventually creeps me over into the realm of a guy with Red-and-Black colored glasses. I believe the hype. And when you read the stories about the lives of coaches and players, it's so much easier to root for them and believe their Video compilations and lower-level stats.
I AM surprised that they're picked #8. I wanted to visualize the new offense churning up chunks of Snapdragon turf up and down the field while lighting up the scoreboard. Maybe it was more me wanting a last gasp at a relevant Football squad before all of us Non-P5ers go to DII or whatever lower league moniker they pin on us.

take it the UNLV HC and OC are back - many guessed that either or both would have been hired away to a new school
SDSU lost so many experienced players that it seems to make sense they would be picked at #8 But did add some possibly good QB's that can be a major addition IF decent to good OL and DL were also added - no one knows until they start playing actual games - until then as the HC has said they are a work in progress

With all the turnover a bowl eligible season would be an accomplishment.

If we win at Cal "stinkin" Bears + I see my first ever win (in ANY sport) at The Snapper this season, all the rest is gravy...

ESPN upgraded State from 4 wins to 7 wins in their FPI+ calculation.

If we can go 500 in Coach Lewis first year with noticeable improvement throughout the season and an exciting team to watch I would be very pleased.

It's going to take time to rebuild. I have a hard time seeing them exceed last year's record.

I am with ESPN FPI… this team is more talented than last years team… it is all about how quickly they can implement the systems.

If UNLV can go from dead to compete for the MWC Championship, why can't the Aztecs?
It's not like the MWC is the SEC

Last years team had significantly more defensive talent

Last years team had significantly more defensive talent Really? They couldn’t tackle to save their lives. McDonald couldn’t shed a block and dove at ankles. Ratcliff would get torched in coverage and took bad angles. Fiaseu is way too small to be playing in the box Fountain was way too small to be playing DE. Dez Malone was the biggest loss on D.

One thing that might be worth considering is whether the head coach is more talented this year than last? It's not just the players.

It's going to take time to rebuild. I have a hard time seeing them exceed last year's record. I think it's likely we beat last year's record. I'm sure we will be watching a more entertaining style of offense.

The fresh slate with a new philosophy will be 10x better than last year, and if it goes the way I think it can, be 100x better than last year!

Fiaseu was the team's second best tackler behind Josh Hunter. Fely was his size lbs and hugely impactful. Fountain was the biggest disappointment last season. Dude played on skates vs the run. Technique was his biggest issue with his size dude needs to be a technician or explosive and that's why it looked like he played on skates since he wasn't explosive
