Bruins run-ruled GCU yesterday, so clearly a beatable team. Aztecs played far from their best yesterday. If they put in a tournament-worthy effort this afternoon, they'll get another game. Let's hope all bodies are available after yesterday's episode of M*A*S*H...

3-2 GCU after 3.
Started with a bit of Small Ball from the Aztecs, and with bases loaded Alyssa Garcia lifted a deep fly to center that the outfielder looked like she misplayed. Two runs scored, but equally important was that Mac Barbara stuck it out on 2nd. So... runners on 1st and 2nd instead of 1st and 3rd. Next batter lofts another deep ball to center, runners stay put. I gotta wonder if Barbara, who took a hard foul-fall off her shin yesterday while at-bat, might be a bit gimpy today. She runs really hard and fast otherwise -- and we'd be all tied at 3 as we head into the 4th.
At any rate... We've got a pulse on this patient!

Through 4 -- and we've got a new game! Somebody got JoBoo his rum.
A.J. Murphy with a solo blast to tie it up. And a Back-to-Back dinger from Angie Yellen.
Allie pitched herself out of trouble in the 5th, but we wasted a golden scoring opportunity later in the inning. And somebody get Barbara Mac a purple heart at this point. Took a shot to the ribs on a pitch.
4-3 top of 6, SDSU...

Watching this game, you are left to wonder what the score would currently be if SDSU played a clean game in the field, and a clean game on the basepaths.
Instead, it's 5-4 GCU heading into the bottom of 6.

Got 3 outs to get it done.
Left two runners on in the 6th. Perhaps most dire... Barbara and Garcia just batted -- so they are gonna have to figure this thing out with batters 3 through 9. There's some pop there, but still...
Need the gloves first here in top of 7.

GCU finally really earned their keep in the top of 7, getting to Light and then dropping one into the right-center alley off Hernandez with bases loaded.
9-4 GCU and it's a long swim back up to the surface...

That's that.
Gave it a shot in the 7th, post 3 -- but even while giving it their best shot, they still ran into an unnecessary out. Bases loaded, but a hot grounder to 2nd from Alyssa Garcia couldn't find the outfield, even with a huge bad hop, to end it.
Good season. Really good season. Two title banners to hoist (or in this case, paint on the outfield wall). But you just know this is gonna eat at them. To go 0-2 in the regionals with the hand they had, it is gonna leave a taste. It's the kind of thing that makes the returning vets come back at it with more resolve.
See you in 2025. Thanks again for another awesome season, Aztec Softball!

Light's underhand toss to 1st was embarrassing and cost them. And Jordan missed dunks. This stuff happens. And it happened in bulk in Westwood over two days. They didn't play anywhere near their potential -- I think as a team they'd admit. There were so many El Stinko moments, both O and D, spread around through the roster so liberally that to assign any one play as having a "cost"...?? Nah. They... plural... as in all of them.. pried defeat from the jaws of victory innumerable times. The real bummer is that even with all that fumbling and bumbling... They were right there. There were some sleepless hours last night, guaranteed. |

I was responding to a post about recruiting a dominant pitcher by saying we need one that can also field their position, something that is a major issue with Light the last 2 years. By "costing"us, I meant it cost us 2 runs. She became scared to throw over-hand. |

Well if she has anogher season it's the coaching staff's job to work on the throw and her confidence to make it. JMO
