Very brief. In the last 6 games of the season, ones that really counted, the full MWCT and MM, Saunders was 4-20 from 3, a robust 20%. Add that to the fact that he also wasn't getting his share of rebounds and his leaving doesn't feel that bad. The final three games of the regular conference season he was 9-17 from 3. Take away those three games and he shot 29% from 3 for the rest of the year. I was upset when he left but I think it was more that it was such a surprise and I had hoped he would become more of a real 4 on the boards next year and get to the line more also. But I think he is who he is and that's fine but I really like the Compton/Gwath combo instead. It's kind of like you're going out with someone that's Ok and you like them, but you're hoping it turns into something better. And you see other potential partners and think, "wow, maybe we'd be a better match", but you stay with your original partner anyway. But then they dump YOU and suddenly, they seem really wonderful and you miss them. But after you start dating again, you find people that seem to be much better suited to what you want and need. I wish him well but like our new options much better. I’m sorry you got dumped, Doc. Glad it worked out in the end. Maybe we need to start AztecMatch.com just in case Doc has some bad luck again with the ladies. 😁 |

Maybe we need to start AztecMatch.com just in case Doc has some bad luck again with the ladies. 😁 Thanks for offering the match making but I ended up with a wife who goes crazier at Aztec games than I do, who can walk into the TV room and if there's Basketball, Football or Baseball on, she sits down, asks who we're rooting for and why and they proceeds to follow the game, rooting appropriately while knowing all the nuances and rules of the situations. I hit the jackpot! |

Maybe we need to start AztecMatch.com just in case Doc has some bad luck again with the ladies. 😁 Thanks for offering the match making but I ended up with a wife who goes crazier at Aztec games than I do, who can walk into the TV room and if there's Basketball, Football or Baseball on, she sits down, asks who we're rooting for and why and they proceeds to follow the game, rooting appropriately while knowing all the nuances and rules of the situations. I hit the jackpot! Mine is pretty much the same. She sits and asks who I'm rooting for (if non-Aztecs or Padres, otherwise it's obvious). Oh, and she will not watch football games with me and only basketball. She says I get way too angry and yell too much with football. Hoke almost cost me my marriage, but Lewis might be able to save it! She does let me attend most games, and encouraged me to go to the Final Four. She might be a keeper, but almost 25 years later I am still on the fence. 😂 |

This season carries a lot more mystery than previous ones. Saunders was loved by his teammates and seemed to feel the same in return. His parents were bullish on SDSU (on Xhitter) right up to the JCJ announcement.
We know Saunders was good and expected a leap into a bigger role this season...yet he left.
We know how Dutcher treats his veterans and Saunders was just stepping into that role.
We know that Dutcher had frustrations during 23-24 with Saunders missing his positioning on D at times and he was replaced by Pal as a starter.
We know that Saunders had front row seats in practices to see Gwath's potential. He may not have seen Compton nor JCJ on a court. Just Gwath.
Knowing all of the above what would make you transfer out? I have to believe the reason for leaving was around playing time concerns.
I hope he kills it at Virginia. The better he does, the better it reflects on SDSU.
Also, my gut tells me we will be just fine if not better.

This guy looks familiar but we keep chatting. He asks me what do I think this year? " we have kind of a young team and I anxious to see how the young players improve" Then he asks who's my favorite player, I say other than Ledee its Waters, he follows up what did I think about Bradley. I respond he was one of our best players but Waters makes his FTs. Discussion goes to Byrd and I say I really like him, he plays hard, tough on D, rebounds and is fiery, just has to get through the injury bug. Trammell? Oh, he can make 3's but gets beat up on D. What about Saunders? I said, for a guy his size he needs to step up and battle inside, doesn't rebound, plays kind of soft. We get to the arena he introduces himself... it's one of the assistant coaches... Did I just put my foot in it? LOL

I’m sure hoping you were asked as “ just making conversation”, otherwise we need a new asst coach. They see the players innpractice everyday, private work outs, games with a Birds Eye view, not to mention video, also the stats don’t lie. I agree with most of your assessments though. |
