So the majority of the dust has settled (I think), with who’s coming and going for SDSU men’s hoops. Here are my thoughts now that the surprise of players leaving has left.
Parish: I’m fairly impartial here, he was a solid contributor for us but I definitely wouldn’t call him a game changer. If he proved to be a 40% 3 point shooter this would be a big hit but his consistency just wasn’t there. Loved his heart, though, had an attitude that I didn’t see in a lot of our players last season.
Butler: It always stings to lose a 4 year player, especially one that left it all out there and always played the right way. It’s hard to pass up an opportunity from a place like Kentucky, though, and I could see him having a decent season there, but I don’t see him being a focal point by any means. Question I have for all of us…if he didn’t hit “the shot”, would any of us had expectations that he was actually an NBA level talent? I never saw it myself, just doesn’t have the skill level to be a guard in today’s NBA. Think of how hard Malachi has had it, and he and Butler are on completely Different levels. I do like Coach Pope, and I hope Lamont has a great super senior season at UK.
Saunders: again, it stung a little because we did see flashes of a really good stretch 4 at times, and there was a lot of reason for optimism for the future. It sounds like personal stuff played into his decision to leave, as well as the arrival of a touted fresh at the 4 spot that he’d have to contend with. This clears the deck for Compton to come in and get his growing pains out of the way early and get the freshman jitters hopefully in the rear view by conference play. Would love it if Saunders would have been a 4 year guy, but that’s just not the reality these days.
Boyd: I liked his game against us in the ‘23 final 4, plays with an edge and a confidence that fits the mold of an Aztec player. Hope he can shoot upper 30% from deep and average 3-4 assists a game. Curious to see if he plays more of a combo role with BJ sure to see more PT at the point this season.
Coleman- Jones: Jaedon Ledee he is not, but he does bring a really solid skill set to the post, and I think his ability to stretch the floor as well as play back to the basket is a huge plus. From what I’ve seen he appears to be a really good passer. Which is something Jaedon was not. Once the guys build some continuity that aspect is a big deal.
McKinney: The guy is a dog, and we need a dog. He’s a great replacement for Trammel, and has a little better size but plays with a similar chip on his shoulder, and has great confidence. He plays with a swagger and an edge which I like a lot. Great pickup.
Overall I don’t know if there is a star in this group of transfers, but it’s very, very solid. We’ll have another good team next year.

I've been thinking about this as well.
As for Butler, that's probably the biggest loss. Yes, his offense was subpar last season. As a fourth-year senior PG, he should be shooting 75%+ from the FT line, and 38%+ from behind the arc. But clearly his offensive stats suffered a big drop from the previous season. Having said that, he was an absolutely elite defensive player and 2x MWC Defensive POY. I know defensive stats aren't sexy, but the loss of his lockdown D shouldn't be discounted.
But the thing that has me most concerned is that we seem to have gone from a team that had some unique, gifted players -- Flynn, Wetzel, Mensah, Mitchell, Johnson, Arop, Bradley, LeDee -- to just another good (not great) team with a bunch of dudes. Unless, someone really steps up next season, maybe Gwath, Byrd and one or two of the new guys, we'll still be just a collection of dudes. Last season, we lost to Utah St., UNLV, Nevada, Boise St. -- all decent teams, but, again, as was proven in the NCAA Tournament, they were just a collection of pretty good dudes. None of those teams had one or two of those special players who could take over and close out a game down the stretch, which clearly was our achilles heel last season.

Utah St, UNLV, Nevada and Boise St. (and CSU, NM) all could have advanced as far as we did if given our seeding. Those were good teams, capable of winning games in the tournament.
I agree that we will have a good team next year, but not sure it will be a tournament team.
Next year's team doesn't look as good as last years. LeDee had what I believe the best season I've seen since the Fisher era. He absolutely carried our team. You just can't replace a guy like that.
For us to make the tournament again we are going to have to have players step up, and it doesn't look like we have a stud to carry us.
But, on the bright side we have a collection of good players, any of which could step up and have a great season. We've got two seasoned guards (Boyd and McKinney) that look solid, Waters and Byrd could go off, and JCJ seems like a good pick up. I thought Heide showed a lot of promise as a freshman. BJ Davis will have a chance too.
The whole Sanders has left is going to be hard to fill, maybe Gwath, but we still need depth. As far as the other freshman, it is tough for a freshmen to come in a play well but it happens.
It will definitely be another exciting season! I already can't wait!

I definitely agree that Butler was our biggest loss in the portal. He was the only one who had an elite skill set (defense).
Parish was average everywhere and maybe a bit above average on defense. I wasn't bummed to see him leave. I think Byrd will be at least equal or better next year.
Saunders hurts, but he should have been a much better rebounder with that body.
Replacing Ledee's scoring is our main concern, but we became pretty one dimensional down the stretch when Waters got hurt and no one else could make a three. If Waters can return to his early season form and Boyd can get back to the 40% shooter he was before last season we'll be a pretty dangerous team. I'm optimistic next years team will be better than last..

My view is Ledee could take over a game but any one needs help. There were times where there was no help. The opposition could stack the key and place best defender on ledee. We needed a reliable 3 point shooter to get the opposition to pay for stacking the key. Our players did fairly poor on mostly good looks. I question seiko’s 3 point percentage if he was getting that percentage of good looks. Last year’s team outperformed my expectation solely because of Ledee. I was expecting more offense from our guards and more improvement from Saunders. Waters had my hopes high, but for whatever reason (maybe injury related) his conference play did not approach his OOC play. Hopefully he can obtain his early season form. Butler’s defense will be missed, but I suspect we have stepped up offensively and decision making. I wanted him back and had hopes that his offensive roes from last season was a blip and not representative of what he could do.

Gonna jump in here, it has always seemed to me that most of the players(Fisher,Dutcher era) that were here 4 /5 years seemed to peak/ level off at end of Soph or mid Jr year? Not, sure why? The system, the prototype we recruit, or even the coaching/ philosophy? So, as to Butler, he was a good/great defender! But, so inconsistent on both O and D. He seemed to to get blown up by really good guards/ballers a few/numerous times. He obviously digressed offensively this last season and possibly all 4 years. I personally think it was best for all he move on? I think the transfers and recruits are intriguing and have potential and skills we've lacked for this coming season. As for not knowing where the scoring was going to come from? I doubt anyone guessed/ believed/ knew LeDee would be all he could be? Or the Wetzel would step up all aound like he did. What we really need is 2 or 3 guys to step up and equal or average their career norms consistently. As for Gwath, like all of us, I only know what I've heard. It seems like he could be the real deal? But, 2 things I'm always worried about, 1) the best player(injured/redshirt) at practice and 2) big men with foot problems. Hopefully, we will actually get all the cogs working this season to be back at top of the MWC and continue our Dance success.

As for some guys plateauing, yes, that's a thing. most college hoopsters make their biggest jump from sophomore to junior (which is why the xfer of Saunders stung.) I don't recall Butler getting blown up by anyone on D -- except maybe a couple of UConn guys. LeDee wasn't a big surprise for me, and probably a few other fans who were paying attention. He hit a clutch 12-foot jumper that put us into position for Butler's dramatic buzzer beater against FAU. And he was our second-leading scorer down the stretch that season in limited minutes. Here are his stats for for '23 MWC Tournament and NCAA Tournament games (I omitted a couple games in which he played only a few minutes.) wyo: 10 pts/8 reb, 19 min. usu: 13 pts/10 reb, 19 min. charleston: 8 pts./10 reb, 25 min alabama: 12 pts./6 reb, 18 min. FAU: 12 pts./8 reb., 14 min. I really thing Gwath is going to be a revelation. Looking forward to seeing him play. Hopefully, he'll be able to hold up to the pounding of college hoops.

We definitely were one dimensional last year, but that was because we couldn't shoot! If guys could hit open looks last year we would have been a two or three seed.

Waters played more minutes in games than he ever had. He was effective as USC's 6th man, meaning he only had to play in spurts. Here, he just ran out of gas.

I think he's going to surprise a lot of people offensively. And if Gwath is any where near being the athlete and shooter it's suggested he is, JCJ and Gwath should rather easily match or surpass the total points and rebounds LeDee/Pal or LeDee/Saunders put up. I think we'll be fine and once we get a transfer wing who can shoot, we're going to be a tough out for everyone, including Gonzaga.

Here are some of them- House 28, Thomas 29, Anderson 16, Amery 17, Brown 25, House 22, Blackshear 22, Clifford 20... not sure Butler guarded all of them, but do remember him on at least half. And if he wasn't he should of been moved to the hot hand if possible? He had some great games , but I felt he had at least an equal amount of not so great games. Just showing examples and like I said, gave us 4 years, just maybe time to move on?

Solid guards coming in to replace Butler/Trammel, Waters getting back to form and Byrd taking the next step. Additionally, Dutch has commented several times about the incoming freshmen being capable of starting next year. I think Pharaoh will be an upgrade from what we saw from Saunders.

Think the combo of Compton and MG at the 4 will give the team a decent accounting of themselves and effective duo - both come into the season as rookies but with high expectations - but College is much tougher then HS - Yes MG did have a year at SDSU as a Red shirt to learn
Can JCJ and Heide hold their own at the 5 is also vital - with Shay or the the other 7 Ft true Freshman there to try to defend down low
Boyd has the experience having been at two MM 's and McKinney who has played 4 years - provide experience
Last year the team did not get the consistent production that was needed by the guards and SF - hope they will and play some solid defense -
