It's because the #2 media market doesn't want us to be P5(4 now).

I'm surprised Chicago isn't ND and I'm even more surprised NYC is still ND. When I was a kid growing up in the NYC metro area ND was the team but I would have thought over the last 50 years that things had changed a lot.

It’s actually not that surprising. www.mlive.com/business/2013/05/brain_drain_report_michigan_re.html#:~:text=Nearly%20a%20third%20of%20the,York%20City%20and%20other%20cities. Chicago has a ton of Michigan grads. I would say that Michigan and ND dominate the market. Illini et al are distant competitors. As far as ND, they have a huge presence in NY City and is why they were Big East affiliated and now ACC.

I bet SDSU would be a solid P5 player if they had a Phil Knight/T. Boone Picken's type booster backing them.

The city of LA and its two prominent universities weren't the ones that forced our prez/AD to tell the B12 they weren't good enough for us and that we'd instead prefer to sit around with our thumbs up our butts hoping that the almighty P12 would eventually have no other options but to invite us

Cal football dominates the Bay Area... that's laughable. I bet no school in that list has a weaker presence in that market than Cal doesn't in the Bay Area.
NO ONE in the Bay Area cares about Cal football. Not even most of the scores of Cal alums I know.
That said, we aren't much better in SD

Thanks for the complement? ? ---Just stating facts that the thing lacking for SDSU to be running with the Big Boys is having a couple serious Sugar Daddies willing to drop Big Dollars on the athletic programs. *I think most big dollar donor types from SDSU are much smarter with their money and donate fair amounts to the University and other outside programs not just the SDSU athletic programs because at the end of the day, it is just a game (like it or not!)

Just joking around big guy. And I have longed for a huge corporate doner as well. Little donations DO add up, but not nearly as fast as BIG donations. Football isn't religion in SoCal like it is in the south, and some other parts of the country, so we're not as likely to have some big wig throwing his/her disposable income towards any athletic depts. To a lesser extent, same with basketball.

as we all know SDSU lost its chance for P5 when the PAC whatever dissolved - not SDSU 's fault
Take a look at the top 4 on your chart and would venture a guess those Cities care a lot more about their NFL team then they do about their college team that is in their area

It's because the #2 media market doesn't want us to be P5(4 now). Pretty much. LA's hinterland spreads far and wide; heck San Diego's NFL & NBA teams both moved up their to play second fiddle as opposed to remaining the big dog in SD. And apparently is was a smart move financially.
